Alpine/Mercedes issues???

I had and entire Alpine audio system installed in my 2005 Mercedes C class in April.

I had and entire Alpine audio system installed in my 2005 Mercedes C class in April. The system consisted of IVA-W505/P1 head unit with nav, PXA-H701 5.1 processor, KCA-SC100 sirius interface, KCE-400BT Bluetooth interface, PDX series amps and SPX series speakers. From day one the system had problems: volume would be low at start-up and then 2 to 5 minutes later volume would come up to normal level, audio would also completely drop out for minutes at a time, when the volume drop occured there was always a crackling/poping sound that came from all of the speakers. There was also a problem with the Bluetooth phone interface (echo problems).
I bought the vehicle back to the installers, who by the way are Alpine authorized installers, 5 separate times for repair. Over the course of these 5 visits every component in the system with exception of the speakers was swapped out (replaced with new) at least 3 times. At present the system still has all of the same issues and I am having the entire system removed from my vehicle.
I would just like to know if anyone has had this kind of issue with Alpine or any other aftermarket audio equipment installed in a Mercedes. I am considering giving Kenwood a try but if there is some kind of compatability issue with my particular vehicle I may have to leave the factory system in place instead.
Thanks for any help!

i have been trying to figure out how to get a great sound and ease of use out of my future car pc setup.
from what i understand there are few ways to do this.

sound card>preamp>car amplifier
usb DAC>preamp>amplifier
usb soundcard>preamp>amplifier
sound card with optical output>optical amplifier

and then i need software to set the crossover and adjust eq from the PC

for example alpine MRA-F350 5 channel digital amp with optical input.
is that same type of optical input or is the standart for car audio optical different from normal PC optical.
can i just hook up that amp to an audio card with optical out or a DAC?

or does it only work with alpine units with optical out?
since it has crosover and EQ buit in.

from what i understand the less processing you have in line the better sound.
so then the best sound quality would be an optical output going directly to the amplifier and then second shoice would be a USB DAC >preamp > car amplifier.

the cheapest way to get great sound would be?

Crossover on PC for SQ + Linux

Here's the plan:
For sound quality, i want to eleminate the analogue crossover stage, so instead of using the composite speakers' crossovers, or the amp's, i want to do the crossover in carPC with a 6 or 8 channel audiophile sound card (SNR > 100dBA), and use a 6 channel amp to connent the woofers, the mids and the tweeters separately to the sound card's outputs.
So if i eleminate an analog stage, i possibly gain SQ. Does it worth it?

Oh, and just for more fun, i want to do it in Gentoo Linux. I'm a sysop, but I know nothing
about the advanced audio part of linux, so any info is helpful :)

So, i also need a decent sound card for this, supported on linux, requirements:
-possibly PCI (to save CPU power, i'm using an Atom 330 1.6 Ghz, and I think crossover will eat CPU too)
-6 or more output channels
-unbalanced RCA output if possible
-SNR > 100dBA

Any help would be appreciated :)
