I just got my ION yesterday. I got it mainly for the dual video outs, but I'm even more impressed with it now that I have it.

I'm posting this in the LinuxICE forum so I can document how the LinuxICE install goes and also document any issues I run into and workarounds that I find.

Here's a list of reasons why this board kicks butt:

- Dual Channel DDR800
This should be a very nice boost over the intel atom board's single channell 667MHz RAM.

- Dual Video Out
I've got a xenarc which accepts HDMI. I plan on adding a second monitor later. When I do, this board is ready

- DVI out
This board would make an excellent media center box. It's got coax and optical out, hdmi + dvi... mythtv frontend lovefest!

- Much better OpenGL performance
The Intel GMA945 is okay, but it doesn't hold a candle to nvidia in this category. perfect for nghost3.

- Faster bios
I haven't done full test yet, but the testing i did do it went from video on to loading the boot loader in about 1s. This is a big improvement over teh 4-7s on the intel board.

More to come later. I've got a ssd drive coming next week. I'm hoping to shave off 4-7s on boot with the faster ram and the faster bios (as well as a slightly faster drive). We shall see.

SrMcTod mentioned to me that people will likely want to tailor the LinuxICE theme to their installation. I personally would like a theme customized for my car. To make this super easy, I think I can write an app that takes a png and creates a theme package that you can drop in and install. To make it even easier, why not make a web interface where you can upload the image, and download the package?

So with this idea, I have 2 questions:

1) is there any interest in using such an app to customize your splash screen on LinuxICE?

2) would anyone be willing to do the web side of the application?

So I keep on hearing about some windows 7 proponents about this thing called "hybrid-sleep". I learned that it actually means hibernate+suspend. Apparently this has existed in Linux for several years now (kantlivelong has been using it for probably 3 years in his car). So, I came up with a new shutdown/quit screen for nGhost that will allow this option:

This will be pushed out to LinuxICE Beta2 users in an update and will be in RC1. Hibernate is broke in the beta's, until you add resume2=/dev/path/to/swap to your grub line. I've updated the iceinstall to do this for you, but that will only fix clean installs. At any rate, if you install beta2, make sure you update before running iceinstall so you'll be sure to get all the updates.

Have fun!

NOTE: this was a cold boot, from the start of the bootloader to login. Add about 1s for the display to load and your playing nGhost styles :D.
Attached below are the bootcharts. As you can see there is room for improvement. I plan on upgrading to 9.10 later next week and trying NilFS. I expect sub 7s boots at that point. I'll also get some hibernate resume benchmarks.
I'm thinking about using a cheaper, lower power pico itx pc system. I'm wondering what kind of system requirements the openICE *conglomeration? amalgamation? cluster****?* uses.
Also are all the dependencies in place to install openICE over xbuntu?
Lastly, is there any way to get OBD support in ICE?
Thanks very much for any help.

LinuxICE Anino currently has 3 repositories: Stable, Unstable, and Testing. This somewhat follows the debian structure with a slight difference. In debian, the "testing" repository is known for it's near-stable quality of packages. In LinuxICE, this is where we throw packages to without any prior knowledge of what works.

The Alpha build of Anino and the 2 Beta's have been built from the testing repository (see release schedule for details). RC1 and RC2 will move to unstable and final will be based on stable.

Once Final is out, I'm trying to think of a good way to do updates. Specifically with regard to new features in packages (as opposed to only bug fixes). Would you rather have constant trickling updates with new features (and potential breakages), or just bug fixes? Bug fixes are much easier to maintain. That way, most of the efforts can be directed to Anino+1.

Thoughts?
