Hello Everyone and thanks for reading my 1st super noob post. I have a datsun 510 that I have set up with an AEM standalone fully programable ECU. I spend a lot of time in the car with a laptop fine tuning my set up. I always thought it would be cool to have a screen in dash to be able to monitor real time stats through the AEM software. It would help a ton when changing the tune at the track or datalogging. After reading some of the tons of info on this site I have caught the bug and want to explore some of the other advantages of running a carpc. I am though mostly focused on the real time AEM dash so im not looking for anything super elaborate.

I already have a a pc and screen that I was planning on using.. I have dedicated laptop I only use in the datsun Already its a dell d600. And just yesterday I managed to pick up 3 xenarc 700ts monitors for 100 bucks

So this is what I have in mind so far...

Dell D600 mounted passenger side under dash on a tray that can be pulled out for keyboard use.
Xenarc 700ts in dash
Carnetix p1900 to power the two.
Creative digital music USB into existing aux input on alpine cd player in the car.

Some things im undecided on .. (feel free to make sugestions)
Front end ... Centrafuse ?
USB GPS Reciever
external slim cd/ dvd player ... needed?

So thats All I have at the moment .. Any sugestions or input would be hugely appreciated.

thanks :thumb:

-Danky

Hey

Basically have been looking around for a while and decided that this was something i really wanted to do.

Still looking for a screen to chuck in but below is what i have planned so far and was looking for some assistance and advise on any modifications that i should/can make to make the build more... well just more

I'll start with the more useful things
PC
Via EPIA Mini-ITX M/B CN13000G w/1G C7 nanoBGA2 CPU, DDR2 RAM, Fanless
Slim DVD Burner, Sony NEC AD-7560A, Black Tray, with a IDE adapter
Corsair Extreme X32 32GB 2.5" MLC SSD (Solid State Disk), SATAII, 240mb/s Read, 170mb/s Write
160W CAR POWER KIT http://www.pcicase.com.au/PSU/160W_carkit.htm
contained in http://www.pcicase.com.au/pc/cs2677mini.htm
and prob just 1gb of ram with an install of xp pro to cap it off

in regards to everything else
using a 600w alpine amp with 60w speakers in both front and rear doors

not quite sure what screen to use, plan to take the entire standard stereo out and replace with a touchscreen that will fill the space but still not quite sure

So yeah any suggestions or comments would be cool

Hello

I have just won a Pioneer AVH-P7950DVD head unit. I was wondering whether it is possible to use it as a monitor screen for a carputer. I am new to the idea of carputer but saw this and it looks like it has everything I want

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...fvi%3D1&_rdc=1

Is it possible to run the RCA from my headdeck and use the S-video -> RCA output of the carputer.

Does anyone know whether I would be able to have the carputer/pc screen while listening to music with this particular head unit? Any help would be much appreciated.

Otherwise I was thinking of selling the head unit and buying something like this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/T0701...fAudioQ5fVideo

I thought it might be easier if I did that. Please let me know what you think.

Thank you very much for your time.

Will be adding radio and camera hardware soon and will tether to my iPhone for mobile internet
So, anygood so far? :biggrin1:

First of all, great site ;) lots of info. I read through a whole bunch of topics and I'm trying to figure out exactly what equipment (and, especially, what software) I'm going to need to make this thing work and make it look "baller".

I own an 02 Acura RSX Type-S (black if anybody's curious). I've done a handful of mods across the spectrum - performance, vanity, and of course my stereo. Most recently I had my ECU modified for USB programmability (the other Honda guys will know it was Hondata KPro). I won't go into the fine-grained details but this thing lets the user alter just about any ECU setting and monitor any sensor.

My other purposes will be to play my MP3 library and I'd like to integrate a GPS so I can get rid of the Tomtom that's suction cupped to my windshield. It makes it a pain to keep the windshield clean. I'd like to build a low-power system - minimal specs to run what I want to run without having the system sit there and chug, that way it's not drawing too much off the battery/alternator and ruining my mileage (or my battery).

That's what spurred me to get this idea into the planning phase. There's another feature that allows you to make a gauge display (with a form designer similar to a Visual Basic or .NET GUI designer), and I don't really like having to look over at my laptop on the passenger seat to see them, I'd rather be able to still see the road out of my peripherals when I glance down for a second.

I've been trying to put together a list of what exactly I'm going to need for this. I'll have a double DIN space available to me - I've read that the Lilliput 7" screens fit almost perfectly and I saw a couple builds that made them look pretty much perfect with a $24 dashboard mounting kit for the RSX. So I've got that covered.

Everything else I'm a bit confused on, though. I'm very familiar with computers and building, so I've got a pretty good idea of what I need, specifications-wise - I'll be running XP, so probably half a gig to a gig of memory and a 1.5-1.8GHz processor, and probably a 32gig SATA SSD for quick startup.

But that leads me to further questions...for my purpose, what would be recommended as far as the actual parts? My first inclination was to use Nano-ITX, but trying to comb through their site and figure out what I need really ended up fruitless.

I'm also not really sure how to get the speakers hooked up - everybody's said to use amplifiers, but I'd like to avoid having another device drawing power. I've already got an aftermarket head unit, and as a result, a wire harness adapter - would it be possible to use 1/8" -> RCA adapters, and then behead the other end of the RCA wires and solder them to the harness adapter's wires? In addition to computers I do a lot of low-level A/V stuff for work, and in my experience these analog A/V signals are generally all compatible with one another.

Anyway, sorry for leaving this novel here...extra props to anybody who reads the whole thing >.>

So I've done quite a bit of research and I put together a list of all the parts I'll need along with sites to buy from and prices on them. I was just hoping for some advice from people who have used them and from people who have used other parts that have the same function but may work better. Thanks for any input/advice!

PC:

Computer From A Friend - 200 (unsure of complete specs but he said something like 3.2 ghz processor, 2gb ram, 500gb hard drive, 512mb video card and a sound card that is apparently top of the line but I'm not sure on it. He has yet to turn the computer on as he won it at a gaming convention and already has his 4 pc's hooked up and didn't want to deal with it. He will be helping me with wiring as he is very good at wiring/electrical work)

Power: (I know inverters are looked down upon by some but a pure sine will work well with computers and I intend to run my xbox in the car so I'll need an inverter for that anyways along with any other random things I'd like to run such as a phone charger)

600 Watt Aims Pure Sine Wave Inverter - 220
(http://www.invertersrus.com/pwrig50012s.html)

Inverter Remote Switch - 20
(http://www.invertersrus.com/pwrirempwrpure.html)

150 Amp Fuse - 15
(http://www.crutchfield.com/p_211FANL...p.html?tp=1806)

Screen: (Looks like a good screen and I've seen others use it so it seemed to fit my needs. I would have liked a single din but they are much more expensive if you actually want a quality one.)

Lilliput 7" 629GL-70NP (Auto Backup Camera Switch) - 260
(http://store.mp3car.com/Lilliput_629...n-016-0002.htm)

Front End:

Centrafuse Navigation - 130
(http://www.centrafuse.com/Store.aspx)

WiFi Reciever: (Wondering how these work and how their signal distance is)

WiFi USB Adaptor - 30
(http://store.mp3car.com/WiFi_802_11b..._p/com-046.htm)

GPS Reciever:

BU-353 Weatherproof GPS Reciever - 36
(http://store.mp3car.com/BU_353_Weath..._p/gps-002.htm)

Bluetooth: (Also wondering about microphones/how to get my phone so that it's handsfree and I can just talk while I'm sitting without a bluetooth headset.)

USB Bluetooth Dongle - 8
(http://mo-co-so.com/cart/products/10...nt-152-35.html)

Backup Camera:

Infrared/Nightvision 1" Camera - 40
(http://store.mp3car.com/CCD_Infrared..._p/com-105.htm)

Radio: (Also open to suggestions I don't know much about getting radio going maybe XM I'm not sure)

Radioshark2 AM/FM Radio/Tuner - 37
(http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000L6OYIM)

DVD:

LG USB External DVD Drive - 60
(http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827136158)

Gaming:

Xbox 360 System - Already Owned

Total System Cost - 1026 pretty good imo for what it is.

So any tips or ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Hey, I've been reading and thinking and pondering and thought I might like any thoughts/advice that would be handed out.

I've wanted to put a computer in my car for years - I used to be rather into computer hardware, case modding etc... but have become much less so as the years role on. Anyway, I have a new car that I rather love and it made me more and more interested.

I have to do the do on the cheap - because I don't have much extra money at all. For that reason I'll likely be going in stages and trying to buy used as much as possible.

I'll be using a desktop PC, building my own case. I think I have a reasonable handle on the assembly, but the main thing I've been wracking my brain over is the touchscreen, and where to put it.

I have an 05 WRX (actually, a 92x) and from what I can tell, pretty much everyone uses the drop-in kit which costs $130. Well, that puts a real bite into my budget, and I'm not a big fan of paying someone else to do something that I could possibly do, so I think that's definitely out.

What I've been considering lately, and what I'm looking for advice on, is mounting the LCD to the top of the dash, using the clock pod. I'm not overly concerned about an OEM look - it has to look good, but non-oem is fine with me. I like this idea because I can keep my current head unit/pocket setup to control volume and for when I don't boot the computer. I also know the chances of the carputer working 100% of the time are about zero, so I like the idea of keeping an HU. My wife would also approve (and it's her car too so waf is important).

The clock pod sits in the middle of the dash and I have two ideas for it.

1. Use a mount (made from wire, secured under the clock pod) extending from where the clock was, out through the hole. This would allow me to tilt and swivel and generally move the screen so that if there is glare, or if my wife wants to change a song, or whatever, it can be moved easily.

Advantages:
- relatively easy to create - basically nothing is being altered, back to stock in 15 min if I wanted
- screen adjust-ability of the screen seems like it would be a good thing to have
- cheap (don't even need a replacement pod)

Disadvantages:
- may well be to obstructive. A 7" lilliput looks like it's about 8"x5". That's pretty big to have in your line of sight - and the seats in this car are low so...
- might look just plain bad

2. My other idea is to buy a replacement pod (cheap used) and alter it to fit a screen. I would set it up so the screen can lie relatively flat or 'pop' up, basically roll on sliders (use kitchen cabinet hardware or something, not sure).

Advantages:
- can recess the screen so it's less obtrusive. Can lie the screen flat so that when I don't want my site obscured at all (ie night driving in unfamiliar areas or if it bugs my wife when she's driving) i can lie it down and have it out of site. Can just lest music play when like that and adjust with the volume on HU so would be fine to do for stretches of time.
- if done well could look pretty good - won't look oem but might integrate well
- cheap (pod is $30 used or so)

Disadvantages:
- not even sure it can be done. The pod goes from 8" wide at the front to 11" at the back - well take a lot of fabrication to basically recreate the pod and include hardware to slide the screen. I don't mind a lot of work - got a long cold winter ahead and I like a project, but if it can't actually be done ... well...i won't know until I've put money and time into it
- TS will sit fairly far from me. I will have to lean forward to change settings. probably not a big deal for me, I'll just be tapping 'next' or changing to obd readout while driving, nothing too involved
- if done poorly will look like **** maybe

Anyway, didn't meant to write a novel - I've been searching trying to find pics of other people who have mounted their screen on top of hte dash but have found little (probably there are lots and I'm not hitting the right string). Any thoughts, comments, ideas etc... are very welcome and wanted. I'll keep updating this thread with my progress and future questions about wiring etc...

Great to have a newbie section for such ramblings without fear of getting barked at :)

I am still working on the pc itself, but I have some questions before I complete that build.

Mainly, do I need a sound card, or can I get away with the on board audio of this motherboard.

ZOTAC Motherboard

Other then that my system consists of the following...

JL W1v 10" Sub
Alpine PDX-5 75w x 4 and 300w x 1 amp
Tsunami Lite Wave Capacitor
JL TR050-CT1/2" Tweaters (possibly two sets one for up high one for the floor boxes)
JL TR600-CXi 6 1/2" 2-way speakers
JL TR525-CXi 5 1/4" 2-way speakers

What I am considering in addition to this, depending on the requirements, is adding 2 more 6" speakers wedged in the front right and front left corners of the floor area in the passenger and drivers side of the car. In addition to the 6"ers I would add 2 more tweeters.

So in total up front, there would be the door speakers, the floor boxes, and then the tweeters up high.

In the back there would be door speakers, and speakers in the very rear on the roof and then the sub mounted in the back next to the right rear window.

All of this would be attached to a car pc somehow, no idea how it would need to be set up, wether through a sound card, or just the built in.

Also no idea how the wiring of it all would need to be laid out/fused.

I will be running it right from the red top under the hood, also have no idea how to best do this. I want to avoid splicing into lines that are already there AT ALL COSTS.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I have pretty much figured out how I'm going to install my Acer Aspire One in my first car, a 1983 Mitsubishi Sigma SE, but I'll let you guys look my ideas over in case I've missed something.

My basic idea is to dock my One in my car in front of the stock headunit, which will be kept for radio, with both PC and HU running my Sony amps and speakers in the back, which will be manually switched for anti-thump.

Using Centrafuse as frontend.

Using nRoute for GPS.

Will use a cut-up gamepad on my steering wheel for control, and thinking of getting a touchscreen kit for the One.

Will use an old Lego webcam as a reversing camera. At this stage I think I will sling it under the towbar.

I will use a cig socket adaptor to power the One.

I also plan to install a high current second cig socket to power my inverter or peltier-based minifridge.

I also have a Vodafone Vodem for when I'm out of WiFi range, and I may also see if I can use my USB DVB tuner.

So those are my ideas so far, I already have this stuff, but have yet to install any of it, as I don't have the car yet. The first thing I will need to do is install the car audio stuff.

Any questions or comments for me?

Hey all. So like the title says, I'm new to carputers and what not. I looked into it on my old car but ended up not doing it as the onboard sound was pleasing enough and didnt really need it. Now that my ms6 was rear ended and totaled I up/down graded to a 2008 rav4 base model with the worst sound I've ever heard. Once I gather some funds I'll start upgrading the speakers and down and all. Down the line I plan on putting in a carputer for music and video storage for the kids.

Anyways down to it. My plans (i just started thinking about it yesterday) are to start off by upgrading speakers and headunit. Down the line I want touchscreen with the carputer. My fear, at the moment, is having to remove the head unit to add in a 7inch screen. I know I can get an FM tuner for the PC but I wanted to keep radio tuning where it belongs (in my opinion) on the head unit. My my question, is it possible to get a single din head unit and down the road get a motorized single din video reciever that I will be able to add to the available space since I only used a single din head unit?

The way I'm picturing it right now would be head unit + LCD screen in dash, mac mini or similar somewhere in car, LCDs on driver and front passenger headrests (hoping to find solution for sending DVD playing to head rests and still have GPS up front. All this thru the computer.)

Or if there's a dual din HU with AM/FM radio + GPS (US) + LCD and inputs for the mac mini, I could go with that and later add the mac mini to the mix with the headrest LCDs.

I'm sure I dont have it all correct it on how it should be so all suggestions and opinions are appreciated and welcomed.

Motherboard - Don't know the specifics, my old desktop... believe it has a 1.8 Pentium 3, retired it for the 3.4 P4 I'm using now.
HD - Grabbin a solid state for the OS / software.
Power Supply - Help me out here
Monitor - Lilliput 8" touch screen in dash / Larger in trunk lid
Soundcard - Help me here, requirement is great audio quality
4-Port USB hub in front+rear
GPS, Bluetooth, etc will be added on too... My main things that i'm unclear on are the audio and the power. What gauge wire would be run to the PSU?
