Standby/Hibernate upon finishing syncing?

Would this feature be possible with EZSync?

The idea is that I would turn off my car, let the carPC run on laptop battery power, sync up, and then put itself in Standby after it's done.

I've looked into this in the past, but decided not to implement because I didn't want to draw people into a false sense of security with regard to power usage.

I run a Carnetix power supply and, like many others, this supply takes a feed from the ignition or from an external source to determine when to power up or down. If I were to implement a hibernate after sync option, then people with supplies like mine or the Opus one might use it, with the result being the PC powers down but the power supply stays switched on powering other devices (eg amplifier and screen). If left long enough in this state the battery will drain.

If enough people post up and say it's a non issue then maybe it can be included.

Thinking about this more, I remember now another reason (probably more important) why I didn't implement it. I couldn't come up with rules that would allow it to automatically decide when to shut down. Another user asked for it and he had a suggestion as to how it could be done; when I reviewed his logic it didn't seem like it would work to me.

In fact I would have to implement it as an application function. When you arrive home (or whatever) you would need to tell the system to shut down after sync. Otherwise the system would not know the difference between boot up, sync, and drive away versus arrive home, sync, and shutdown.

got you, ric. Maybe a trigger button or a keyboard shortcut (fired from Girder, for example) that tells EZSync to shutdown when it's done (as opposed to the normal routine)?

ric, sorry for bringing this back up. Is there any chance this feature might be implemented? This is how I think it should work.

EZSync detects server and starts syncing.

If I want EZSync to shut down the PC after it's done, I'll send a key command to EZSync (probably through Girder). This way, current users who don't want this won't have to do anything.

I've already implemented it, I just hadn't got around to updating this thread.

I've put a checkbox on the user inteface which allows you to tell the system that a shutdown is required after the sync. Once the sync is over the system resets the checkbox and then takes the appropriate action. The shutdown action can be configured as none, hibernate, standby, or shutdown.

I presume if girder sends the shortcut key combo for the checkbox to the window then the checkbox can be toggled?

Girder can send a key combo or keyboard "sentence" to an application. For example, it can send "Ctrl-Alt-T" to EZSync. If you make Ctrl-Alt-T a keyboard shortcut to toggle the checkbox in your app, it'll work.

Ric, how about this solution:

1) EzSync is kept closed (not running)
2) Upon shutdown, we launch EZSync using Interceptor
3) Ezsync attempts to sync. If successfull, it then initiates a shutdown/hibernate or whatever have you. If not successfull, it also shutdown/hibernate.

This way, there will never be a problem with Ezsync attempting to sync & shutdown upon system bootup. (it is not launched upon boot, only upon shutdown etc.)

Alternatively, code something into EZsync that will be able to determine when a hibernation has been initiated, and have it do it's thing. Frodo coded Interceptor, so he might have some code to share.
