Hi all,

I am underway on my dashboard fabrication. I went with the ABS solvent method to fabricate the right shape with the bezel and have begun the long, tedious sanding process.

While in this process, I wanted to make sure that I was prepared mentally for the next step, so I wanted to ask you kind folks some things about the painting process.

I have read numerous threads about people making their beautiful fabrications, but few talk about the type of primers/paints used.

Is a standard primer okay or is there a good kind for interior paint for cars? Should I stay away from one kind more than another? If I was to just go out and get some, it would be from a local hardware store (Home Depot, Lowe's, etc..). So, what should I be looking for?

After priming, I was hoping for a typical finish for the paint. A semi-gloss or flat black color since my dash is black. Is there a paint that gives the speckled texture like on the Metra kits and most dashes? If not, what sort of paints would work well on a car's interior? (I can't judge if a spray can of paint would look good or not, so if you guys have any input on type of paint, I'd appreciate it.)

For starters there is a difference in quality. If you don't have a spray gun you can probably buy some Dupont 1K in a spray can. As for a speckled texture, SEM makes a textured paint that kinda looks like factory plastic panels. You could probably just spray that on and then get a can of SEM that resembles the interior of your can and you should be set. I personally don't like a gloss finish on textured panels so I wouldn't recommend getting any ordinary spray can paint. The SEM stuff actually works like a dye. Good Stuff.

Can I get the Dupont 1k from a local hardware store or will it require an automotive or paint store?

I found it on the net, but I'd rather just pick it up somewhere.

The only place I have seen it around here is carquest. If you don't want it glossy you can just use the SEM paint. It will have to be somewhere that deals with dupont paint (most of them cary SEM too). Of course it isn't as good as an actual automotive clear but it is alot better than duplicolor.
