Fiberglass Sub Box.

After reading on the internet for awhile on how to do these i'm going to take a try at it. I have an 01 dodge ram ext. cab, that i want to put a box under the back seat. I'm going to get some spacers and lift my back seat up a little bit, but had some questions.

1. How would i get the top to fit against the seat when it is locked down ?

2. I put masking take then tin foil on my floor and make a mold of resin and mat ? and by doing so do i just put pieces of mat down and cover them in the resin ?

3. Should i make a structure out of MDF for a box ? like a face piece and run strips of MDF or dowels down both sides and the top to have something to stretch the fabric over ?

4. What is the best fabric to stretch ? i saw someone mentioned a bed sheet ?

5. How much stuff will i need to make a box to fit 2 12'' CompVr's?

6. What release agent would be good so i can get the bottom mold off the floor to finish it outside the truck ?

7. If i made something like a C with the top bottom and back while in the truck would it be strong enough when i pull it out without sides on it ? because the sides would pretty straight and i cant tape them off ?

8. Also on the first layer do you put the resin down first or the strips or matt ?

any tips would be much appreciated.

Most of these can be found through the Search, but I'll try to help.

Use MDF for the top part of the box. Just measure out the size.

Tape down the tin foil to the floor, cut some mat/cloth and lay it down, then apply the resin. Some say to apply the resin then lay down the fiberglass, but that can be messy. Do 2-3 layers of fiberglass then let it dry. It should be sturdy enough after the 3rd layer to pull out of the truck. Once out, apply more layers (in 2-3 layer increments) until it has almost zero flex.

Not 100% sure the question, but I did the bottom of my box with fiberglass since there were a lot of curves, then I did the sides and top out of MDF. No fabric, no dowels, just some fiberglass, MDF and a few late nights.

Fleece is the top choice, other fabrics, such as an old tshirt, works as well. It all depends on how big of a structure you are making and/or how cheap you are.

No clue, check their website for the recommended volume then figure out how much of your box will be fiberglass.

Tinfoil will allow you to pull the mold right up and out, once out just peel what you can of it away. As I said before, 2-3 layers *should* be enough strength for you to be able to remove it form the truck. If it is huge, it might take more.

so you wouldnt recommend making the top and side and everything out of fiberglass ? because the top and front will be pretty flat, should i just use wood there or can i fiberglass everything ?

thanks. I think that i might glass the bottom back sides and front and just use MDF for the top of the box(like stated above). I'm still trying to figure out how much matt and resin to use for that size of a box ?

I can't say for sure, but here's what it took me - I fiberglassed roughly 1/2 of the floor under the rear seat in my extended cab pickup and it took 2 bags of mat and 2 bags of cloth to get it strong enough to my liking. It equated to ~7 layers total. Grab 4-5 bags (I think my "bags" contained 48x48 of fiberglass), you can always buy more or take some back.

i bought a gallon of resin and 3 bags to start out with. I got 1/2 gallon left with no matt and covered the floor two layers... how did you do the sides and back out your box ? thats my project for tomorrow, i was thinking of taping from the floor the to seat and fiberglassing that, would that work or whats a better idea ? also whats a good idea on how to spilt the box into two sealed sections ?

Took the seat out and getting ready.

Layed foil down for easy removal later.

Taped off the section being glassed

Half the floor section done with 1 layer

2 layers over the whole floor- no more matt left and its dark

i was told to lay the tin down so that the tape will not stick to the carpet when i go to pull it out later.

what you think of the process so far ?

and what you think about making the sides and back out of glass ?

Cant see much in the last picture since its too dark. I would suggest making the complete box out of fiberglass if youre comfortable with it. Check out the link at the bottom, it explains everything really clearly.
