Cool Audi TT Monitor Fabrication *WORKLOG*, DSL WANRING! -Nexson

Hey Guys!

Coming to you with a Monitor Fabrication for an Audi TT. Not many Audi TT's have much of any work done like this because the area to put a screen is small. So when I got to work on this I was thrilled to make something happen that no one else has seen before, at least for the Audi TT community.

Anyhow, I took the bezel and chopped off the buttons since the customer did not want them. I just have to relocate the IR for power. Once I molded in the bezel, I had to rebuild the right side which was a little rough in the first few steps. From here I was able to stretch my fleece and make my shape, and yes those are pencils. I used the pencils in place of round dowels. They allowed me to get the shape I wanted while I resin-ed the fleece. After the fleece had hardened I just took them out. I added 2 layers of 1.5 OZ US composites Fiberglass Mat to the outside and one on the inside. it was more then sturdy from here.

I know most projects start out rough (at least mine) but this is because a lot of things need to be hacked and chopped up to fit. Then I can get to sanding and shaping. What I like to is I get the fiberglass shaped perfectly ( as much as fiberglass is going to be perfect before filler) so that I only have to use minimal Duraglass, followed by Xtreme to fill just the pinholes.

Anyhow enough of me talking, I have posted tons of pictures to help others out and to show my work. I am about 80% done and will post pics during the rest of the process.

Enjoy!

Below is a picture of what the panel looks like when installed in the car.

This is a stock picture.

Well, I had the piece for just about a week, but I only got to work on it 2 days due to my schedule with the family.

So that is just about 2 days worth of work. worth of work, so maybe one full day =)

When I am out there working, I just can't stop heh

Nice, I can't wait! You should have the cable by tomorrow if the post office rep was right. If not, hopefully Tuesday!

Hey Guys!
Here are the pictures of the rest of the work that I have gotten down.

I started by making my hole for the IR so that the monitor can be powered on via the remote since we opted to do away with the buttons. From here I continued through about 5-6 stages of filling , primering and resanding to get it perfect for paint. After that I wetsanded the primer, so now in fact I was ready to spray.

I use SEM texture spray which is a real pain if you have no experience with it, luckily I do, but basically it needs to be wetsanded down with about 800-2000 to get the texture smooth but without taking the actual texture away. After that I was able to spray with the color coat that it originally had, then I wetsanded it with 2k, then re sprayed for the last time. Now since the color is not as dark as say black, it does not show the texture as much, but you can see it within range,

Now, I still have to add the red lenses behind the IR hole, and proceed to install the monitor and circuit board. In the pictures I just have a small cup holding the monitor up, that is why it is not flush with all the sides, but for the most part, it is indeed complete. i will post final pictures when completed.

BTW Brandon, the pictures fromt he flash sort of make the color look lighter, it is pretty much on target for the color, maybe one shade lighter.

Enjoy!
