Can double din hold pull out and radio?
I have a double din (camaro z28 99') and i decided i want to have a regular stereo as well .. hooked up to the computer. Just seems easiest for me and what i want.
Anyway .... my question is .... can the double din slot hold a like radio and a pullout in dash housing unit? And if so ... do they sell mounting kits to hold both at the same time?

It's actually a 1.5 DIN opening. The only dash kits you are going to find is a standard DIN dash kit. Double DIN can be done in our cars, but it is a custom thing, involving modifying a standard dash kit using ABS plastic and epoxy. Personally, when I finish buying parts, the AC controls are going in the center console, and 7" or 8.5" LCD is taking up the space. I am going to go straight out of a Creative Audigy2 soundcard to my amps. No stereo needed.

hmmm ... ok .. yeah i figured it looked a bit tight if it was even possible.
I just dont know if i like the idea of having my volume controlled totally by my PC. I was just playing with the touch screen monitor .. and i like ... just doesnt seem as friendly or easy as i wanted.
moving the AC controls wouldnt be tooo bad too .. just a bit annoyign i suppose. I have t-tops so i dont use it AS often.
But thanks for the advice ... not quite sure what i am going to do yet then ....

Wait... your dash looks different than mine. I think you might be able to fit a 7" Lilliput/Xenarc where the radio goes, it'll be close. I would measure the size of the radio opening. OR, you might be able to fit a screen in the storage pocket below the radio. Your dash does look like this, right:

I used to own this car, a 1996 camaro, before I got my TA.
This is the TA dash....

OK, cool, I think the interior changed in '97. If you want a neat integrated screen like you see in the finished projects section of this forum, you would have to move the AC controls to the center console (You would have to extend wire and vacuum lines, no big deal) and mount your LCD module to the dash where the radio/AC controls are now. I am also thinking of using a slim-slot DVD drive, and mounting it below the screen, and hopefully there is enough room behind the screen, or somewhere in the dash for the motherboard and hard drive.

i might actually do that.
However .... i dont know about your TA ... but the screen is actually a BIT bigger than the area you have to install for the radio.

Oh, it is. I planned on going to the dealer and getting a replacement radio bezel, then cutting out the cross-piece between the AC controls, and mold the Lilliput face into that. I might have to do some minor surgery to the plastic inside the dash too. I'm fairly confident it can be done.

I was thinking about getting one of these to control my volume... found one at CompUSA and like the idea of a large (even OVERSIZED) volume control...
As for the space in an F-body dash... there isn't a ton... I doubt you'll find the space needed for your mainboard, soundcard and whatever else you want/need. I however have something laying around that might be of use to you. It is a fiberglass amp rack I was going to mass-produce that goes on the back wall of the 93-02 Camaro and Firebird... it leaves your T-top storage space completely usable but like I said, would give you a good place to mount your carputer stuff... I'll look around for a picture and post it or just take one once my batteries in the digital camera are charged. If your interested in more info, drop me an email at rreed17@kc.rr.com . TTYL!

That's a good idea, the only thing stopping me from mounting all my stuff back there, was the problems with extending a VGA cable over that distance. The Powermate is a good idea for volume control, I was thinking of molding it into the area where the ashtray is in the center console. That's a good alternative for control if you don't like the touchscreen for that.

I have an F body too.... (3rd gen for life!) My carputer is mounted in the pit of the trunk... with a false floor over and under it... Like this
sub......amp..........sub......spare tire
|..........|.............|.............|
|..........|.............|.............|
v..........v.............v.............|
\.........................................../...|
..\--(---)---|----|---(---)----/ v <--- False floor #1
|....................................|...-----
|______________________ |..|v v | <---- False floor #2
|..........Carputer here........|..|v v |
|--------------------------|..|v v |
|_______________________|..|v v | <----- Real trunk floor
------
This is a cross section... if you're looking at the tail lights and chop them off... know what I mean?
Sorry forr 1337 H4x05 ascii code... Pics soon... anyways... my point was that the VGA cables have no problem running from the trunk of an F body

That is a good solution if you don't have, or don't use the T-tops. Personally, I'd try to fit it somewhere else. Maybe the storage on the driver's side? Mine is filled up with speaker box. BTW (showing my age here) what does H4x05 and 1337 mean? I see it all the frigging time, yet can't make sense of it. edit: Oh, I see: http://www.urbandictionary.com/defin...m=1337&skip=30
