Lots of computer, Little space
I have a brand-new 2004 GMC Canyon pickup. Regular cab. That means there is no room to mount anything, no trunk, no nothing. (no i'm not putting it in the bed.)
I was going to put my canabilized Gateway in it, but now I'm thinking of going the route of Via's mini boards. I have plenty of computer knowledge, and I'm going to (probabaly) mount a Lilliput 7" touchscreen. Eventually I'll have GPS and wardriving stuff. I just think there is not enough room for my fullsized Gateway with a inverter/PSU. Any ideas for nonconventional PSUs ? Space is super-premium. There is no under seat room. Should I just go Epia ? thanks
Joe

Do you have a glove box? If you don't keep anything in it you could rip it out, mount a small case in its place and do a nice fiberglass/bondo job on it to finish it off.

No room behind the seat or under? Center console? How about under the dash, or in the glovebox as suggested?

here is the truck:
Here's my idea:
I know it doesn't look like it would fit, but it's about 11" wide.
No room under seats and no room behind seats (I'm 6'4" they are back) all the way) the glove box is too tiny. Thats why I'm thinkg about making a sub-enclosure like box. Any Thoughts?

That area is perfect! Time to make a custom center console! You can easily fit an Mini-ITX board, and all the stuff you need plus a Lilliput built right into the top! You've got a good idea with the drawing.. just get started now!

I'm bumming I need to buy a mini-itx... i was hoping to use the perfectly good Gateway 950Mhz I have laying around... Oh well... guess I need to read up on building sub-enclosures... think a regular ATX PSU with an inverter will work ok ?

You can try to fit the Gateway mobo there.. I don't know the size of it.

No for something like this I'm thinking a good Epia mobo, Opus power supply, and absolutely a slot load dvd-drive slim or not.
Also what about the glovebox, how big is that? I would think you'd want the screen as close to the front of the dash as possible. Is there any space behind the seats?

I don't exactly know how your truck is layed out or if you're going to build an enclosure over that area or if you're planning on building and drilling into that area. But I would think that that is where the end of the transmission/driveshaft is so you can't drill into that to mount anything on the inside of it. You could still perhaps build a small enclosure over the entire thing and put all the components between the two.
Again, I don't know if you're truck is different at all, but generrally thats what that would be.

Yes, so no room behind the seats.
The glove box is too small for anything useful. I plan on building an enclose to rest on top of it, as the drivetrain is sort of important.
I could fit the Gateway mobo, but lets be honest, the less power consumption the better right? I'll Ebay a Epia... probabaly a M-9000. A 7" Lilly and probabaly a tray-loading DVD-ROM.
As I sit in the driver's seat, the screen should be about thigh high and at a good angle for use. It wouldn't be good watching a movie or anything, but I'll get over that.
My other thought was putting Linux on my xbox and just throwing my Xbox in the enclosure, but I think... dare I say it... I'd miss Windows. Plus I know Windows better. That doesn't means I can't throw the Xbox in as an Xbox (though I know from past experiance that running an Xbox through a PC leaves a slight lag that makes gameplay annoying.) I guess we'll see.

Hey EB - I've got a Durango and am working on redoing my console. I used plexiglas to build a case to house an itx, 3.5 dirve and slot load dvd. Take a look at the pix at www.amicrocomputer.com

faiz_23 Thanks for the heads-up, I'll check it out next.
This mod is special because it requires ZERO perminent modification to the car. It'll be 100% stand-alone (minus plugging into the cars power.)
