Project Update / Factory Match Spray Paint

I just wanted to remind everyone that car makers usually provider exact match paint. Ford even makes Interior Vinyl/Plastic paint that is an exact match. This stuff is awesome. If your going for a stock look it is the only way to go. It is a little pricey at $13 a can though.

As for my project, I will be correcting the dash install this weekend. I have been using the system for over a year with a cracked up bondo job around the trim ring. I used wood filler first and then re-did it with bondo and they both cracked over time. I ordered 2 tubes of Duramix 4040 that should be here on Thursday and will be working on in Friday and Saturday. There are some excellent videos for using it at the Glassworks site, but you have to pay $5 a month or $40 a year to see them.

I will post some before and after pictures when I get it done this weekend.

John

I just spoke with a Honda Repair shoop over the phone. He said that if I want matching paint in Aerosol form. That I should check for a code on my door for the right color. Then I can go to PepBoys and get it for like $5 bucks. He also said that I could need a clear coat over it.

It sounds to me like it may make sense just to get the SEM paint and try to match it, that way I won't need to deal with clear coat.

Can anyone add anything to this?

if you want paint matching the "exterior" of you car - get your paint code and go to www.paintscratch.com

I found the ford paint by checking out www.f150online.com forums. When I asked the first dealer the jerk told me that they don't make it anymore because he was to freaking lazy to look up the part code. 3 months and several generic paint tries later I called another dealer on a whim. He was nice enough to look it up and tell me that even though he did not have any, he pointed me to the other local dealers that did.

In my case the paint did not require a clear coat, however, this time I may use rocker panel spray to get the right texture.

SEM does a great job man. You really can't go wrong with it and you won't need a clear coat.

I have read about using SEM Vinyl stain to paint trim parts. It is supposed to wear better. Has anyone tried this?

I just finished using SEM for my case. It is metal and plastic, it's coming out very well. I need to pick up a darker grey or black for my dash this weekend.
