What is the best finish for custom dash?
I am at the stage to finish my custom molded screen and was wondering what everyone else has had the best luck with. I have a very fine textured spray paint (looks like about 150 grit sandpaper when applied) but from testing it looks like it will be too glossy.

flat black plasti-kote bumper and trim looks very OEM. at least for my honda, it's almost spot on in shine and texture.

Polished, carved hardwood. Engine-turned billet aluminum or stainless steel. Plastics? Bah.

It's been almost four years, I stumbled across this while researching which paint to use for my fabbed dash piece.
Has anyone done anything with undercoating? I'm thinking it would be nice if I could have the sort of rubber-ish coat that the OEM piece had. Unless that's what the Plasti-Kote bumper/trim stuff above gives....

just finished my dash using rubberized undercoating.
The trick is to use multiple coats but thin coats or you will get runs. Also patience in between coats. Being in the last phase of my install I was a little over anxious and as a result I got a run down the flat side of the front finish. But it works great if you have a dash you used a lot of bondo on and have a few uneven surfaces. As I did, it was my first attempt at fiberglass and bondo so there were a lot of imperfections that the undercoating covered up for me.

Thanks! I'll try that next if the next experiment doesn't work. I picked up some spray on tool protector.

How about exterior color paint? hnoes:
You could get some spray can touch up paint, some nice clearcoat, and make the custom dash really stand out...
EDIT:
Whoops, i just realized I replied to a year old thread... O_o
