Okay,
We're getting closer! Met with the machine shop, and the current demand of orders, if filled, will pay for the layout, design, C&C set-up & machining and still stay below $100 per unit w/shipping. Once the aluminum piece is complete, we'll see if the design is robust enough to make it in plastic - my concern is the DVD support, made from the plastic that the machine shop offers, may be too soft and lead to eventual failure.
I ordered a Lilliput today. I'm not having any luck getting a dash, so I'll be getting one new from my VW dealer - please send K.Y. or Vaseline as emergency aid - PM me for the address.
If anyone has AutoCAD abilities, who will work for (premium) beer, PM me - that will help to lower my costs.
With any luck, I can get pieces finished within a month!

James - sorry it took so long to get that center console to you. I'm looking forward to seeing what comes out of it.
Also, it was great seeing your install today; it's very impressive.
Cheers,
CB

Chris, It's not a problem! I'm still on schedule.
To those who are interested in the facepelate:
I have all the components I need and will spend most of today doing the drawings. I'll be giving them over to the machine shop in the first half of the week. We are still on schedule to provide the faceplates in two weeks. Keep an eye on this thread. If you have sent me an E-mail (not just a PM) I will E-mail when the faceplates are available as well as update this page.

I met with the machinist today and I think his kid needs braces. He's going to put an estimate together for me, but his rough estimate is that he'll need to charge about 20 hours for his "engineering" time. That's $1800! That doesn't include machining or materials cost. He'll give me an official estimate tomorrow, but I obviously can't go with that estimate as my asking price for the faceplate (in such low volumes) would be close to $200!
I hope to have an estimate tomorrow, but I'm not feeling good about what he's going to charge. In the interim, I'll be learning Autocad so that the "engineering time" can be reduced. I'll have more information, soon.

I assume they are making a die to stamp out the face plate, or are they going to cut each face plate out individually from a block of steel? If they are making a die, then trust me, even knowing autocad wont help you, because it would be ENGINEERING time, not autocad time. And if each one is made out of a block of steel, then the face plates would cost a ton. Either way, I dont see how you could sell them for 100 a piece, no matter what is being done.

They're being machined from aluminum. The "engineering time" is for recreating my crude drawings into an engineering grade drawing so that it can be input into his C&C equipment. That was his explanation almost verbatim.

Is he doing any measurements off of the part, or just off of the drawing? If its off of the drawing, send it over to me, and I can send you back a file. 20 hours seems like a long time. I assume he just said that to see how serious you are about this, cause little projects are not very profitable.
It still seems kind of odd to me that each individual part could be manufactured for under 100, especially being aluminum is kind of expensive. I guess I dont know enough about the market to really give a good guess though at what the price should be. doesnt the machining have to be done on the top and bottom too? cause I know that adds a lot to the cost per unit. But if you can actually pull it off for under 100 a unit, then thats pretty impressive.
Matt
