New carputer project started - 350z (56k beware)

I had posted a couple of times before to show off my old 97 A4 carputer project... but since that car was totalled in October, I have started the install of the carputer into my 2003 350z.

old system:

start of new system:
started fabrication on my dash assembly. Used an american international dash kit, screwed it in from the back and epoxied the front. Then filled in the map pocket using a piece of plexiglass to house my notebook dvd drive (usb housing) for the carputer setup. It all has been bondo'd to match the curve of the dash. It's obviously still a work in progress and I will be posting pictures as I progress.

epoxied:

plexi in - dvd drive test fitted

starting to bondo

starting to sand

bad pic but it shows the contour

test fitting

guidecoat:

here's the lower console area smoothed and painted already (used SEM plastic and vinyl paints - titanium metallic with a satin clearcoat)

installing the 7" xenarc screen in the stock nav location
let me know what you think

Looking very promising! But why not mold the front black plate from the optical drive, I think it would look much better.
I like the RF head unit, looks a lot like a Denon one? How is it in terms of audio quality?

that RF head unit is one nice unit!

it's from the 90s and was made by denon back then....too bad their head units aren't the same quality now....or even close really....=/

lookig good so far!

I've always thought that it would be perfect to put a puter in a 350Z......I almost traded in my GTi on one.....track version of course...lol

so many little nooks and crannys...it's just begging for one!

Do you still have a gallery of your audi somewhere? I am buying an a4 very soon and really have wanted to do exactly what you have done in that picture. It was very professional looking. I love the OEM look.

got a couple of friends that put the 2003 350Z compartment in their 04 and 05...the 03's factory nav compartment not only flips up, but will slide back so that it is recessed...the only negative is that the color is just slightly off- looks good nonetheless

Very nice, that paint job looks excellent! It didn't even occur to me to use a satin clear coat to get that OEM flat look instead of everything being all glossy.

That looks very good. I would like to see pics of it completed and installed.

I am trying to get a handle on the car pc. Why use the PC and the head unit?
