LCD TouchScreen in Audi TT

Hallo !
I'm italian, so sorry for my bad english.
I would realize a carputer for my car, an Audi TT 225HP Quattro, but before do it I would have some your impressions. In order to obtain a simple idea of this project I have posted 2 pics of the dash.

The first is a comparison among :

a) 8,4" touchscreen display (carTFT.com)
b) 8" wide touchscreen display (carTFT.com)
c) 7" wide touchscreen display (carTFT.com)

Which of them do you prefer ?

The second is a comparison of the position of the 8,4" ( my love :-) )
in case of I completely erase the upper cdradio slot or If I mantain that,
but the screen is in a lower position

Another time ...Which of them do you prefer ?

I really want to get my hands on a TT. The biggest problem that I have with it though is exactly what you're working to fix right now. I like options B and C the most. How do you plan on mounting it? Where will you put the A/C controls? Keep us posted

Thanks for you reply, I'm very very doubtful for the choice.
I never see this monitor (8,4") in action but I think it's very
interesting. Maybe, at the end, this will be my choice.
In a car, large display is best, because you have may
focus, in less time, your eyes on it.
The TFTLCD I'm speaking is this

To mount this screen I have to cut the radio middle dash section
of my car. To avoid some problem last week I bought a second hand
radio middle dash on ebay. So if at the end of all the work goes wrong
I haven't any problem with the original item of my car

I will cut the plastic dash with a dremel like little cutter, I will glue the
case of the TFT but I'm not so sure for the filling process, I don' know
if it's better using bondo like filler or acetone + ABS powder
(as lego blocks, or a tube).

Before fill the dash I will make some experience with another
object.

What do you think about filling product?

You're right about the screen being a little bit bigger, but the drawback is that you really can't keep an OEM appeareance with an 8" screen. I for one, would rather have the 7", simply because it looks better in the car.

Take a look at my attached picture. This is what I have in mind for when I get my TT. I talked to the guys at the Audi Dealership, and they seem to think it wouldn't be any trouble since there's nothing really mechanical about the HVAC controls...they said I'd probably only have to lengthen the wiring.

Upon talking to an installer at Tweeter, he said the trouble would lie in matching the texture when filling in the gaps that this design would leave from the wider stock headunit and the HVAC. Of course the little ridge below the HU will be a challenge as well.

Is there a way to remove and reattach the outer layer (the textured stuff)? I suppose that would make it pretty easy if I bought a second center piece as well...

I can't really tell if there's any textures on the panel. But if it's smooth enough you can get it from paint. The are a few texture paints out there.
I don't think lenghening the cable will be necesary as the distanse is fairly small, but you'll know that when you'll pull the panel out.
If you haven't done this before, get another panel, and work on that. That way, in the end if you don't like it, you don't have to put it on. Also, this is a pretty time consuming operation, so it would be useful if you don't want to drive around without your dash...

Searched google and ebay for a replacement dash, but couldn't find anything. Can you point me in the right direction colpito? What exactly did you search for?

I don't understand what do you mean for "the outer layer (the textured stuff)"
The center dash is made of a whole plastic material, isn't a plastic base coved by a leather-like tissue. The only way to adapt a new redesigned center dash is to spray all with a color that match as soon as possible to the oem one.

If you want find a good and cheap auction for a center dash you have to look for in ebay.de. Remember that Audi TT is a german car

so it's more popular there than in other country as in Italy is more popular FIAT cars

You are right ! The best way to make some experiments is on another dash,
If the piece you find is old and scratched it's not so important because at the end of all modifying work you have to sand and paint it.

If I were you I would get a motorised in dash 1 din unit and mount it upside down so that the screen dropped down when it came out rather than going up

That way you get to keep your TT chrome hideaway plate and you dont need to worry about fabrication etc, I dont think you got the space for an in dash build, not unless you go the ghetto route

I'm trying my best to keep it as clean as possible. While a retractable screen would be easy, it wouldn't look as good and I wouldn't be nearly as happy with it.

I think with enough elbow grease I'll be ok. I think the hardest part now will be finding a way to match the texture. :/

I say, paint the whole lower part (the entire section you plan on working on) shiney black, or silver. It would sort of create an accent color I guess, sort of like wood trim, ya know..

I bet it would come out nice, you can photoChop it to see too.
