im running a via m10000, 512 ram, m2 ATX-power supply. Those figures are still my image running in vmware on my desktop but I expect similar results form the flash drive on the via because its actually optomized for the via chipsets. I'm down even smaller now, I did the minlogon edit and now im getting 12 sec cold boots. Im going through the entire windows folder and deleting all log files and empty folders generated by the install.

That's looking great!
This what has inspired me to do a fully contained doubel din unit and not to mount my pc under the seat or in the boot. I don't want to run cables etc all over my brand new car.
On that note, has anyone thought of using/used a ****ty old double din radio, gutting it and using the chassis for a carpc? I can't see why it wouldn't work to get a similar result to the one discussed in this thread.

I tried with a double din stock cd/radio for my car, but it was WAY to shallow to fit the board. But thats Holden for ya, not going by standard DIN specs and making the whole frame of the opening a good 4cm too shallow (to shallow for even some standard 1DIN motorized DVD players)

Is the speed of your compact flash card a limiting factor in this load. I mean they have compact flash cards reading in upwards of 150X now. Also, usb thumb drives are running even faster than that. I mean I saw a 2 gig 150X card for under 50 dollars today. With that you could install and potentially have a screaming fast install.

Nice find, I might buy that card and find out. For now though I believe the 80x should be fine. It reads at about 10Mbps. Not going to be writing to this card once the OS is installed. Im not sure if the CF<IDE adaptor even reads past 80x . Ill let everyone know how the 80x works out. I only paid 24.99 for the 80x 1 gig card at my local retailer. Didn't want to wait for the mail.
Right now my carPC is out and stripped to the bone. Im swaping the screen at the moment and test fitting the CF<IDE PCB. Ill have some pix shortly

I decided Im also going to add a volume knob and a usb port in the factory 'dead' bottoms to the left above the screen. Im going to make my own 1/4' thick sintra plate at work tomorrow to fit the OEM hole. I will then cut hols out of that for the volume knob and USB opening. Heres a couple pix of my mess at the moment. Im swimming in a sea of electronics lol.
I know some others were asking about the LCD mount so I got a couple pix of that disassembled also.

New setup will *most likely* have an EWF embedded XP install on 1GB flash drive.
Are you buying the XPE Tools for roughly US $995, + single Runtime License for US $90- from Microsoft?
Or are you suing the trial XPE Tools version from msdn?
And lastly, your 12-15 second boot setup - that's not with XPE at all, rather with WinXP with SP1?
Thanx for your replies. Great setup, good fast boots - exactly what you want in this application.
I d/l'ed the XPE trial version, but it would be sad to pay the moneys for a bit of tinkering...

Im not really using the image builder for XPE. I used Nlite to strip down a SP1 windows XP then replaced a few of the OS files with XPE componets. The most important is the "enhanced write filter" so that the embedded OS does not write to the CF drive. Too many writes will nuke the drive, and in stock form windows really like to write a lot to the drive. Paging file is also gone.

Thanx for the answer, I thought that this might be what you're doing.
I am playing with XPE itself, but nLite has surely made it easy to create a very similar runtime environment to XPE - and it is easier to get it up and running the very first time.
EWF is a very nice addition to your setup, will surely save your memory from wearing out. Oonce your software is installed, and configured, you do not need any additional writes to drive anyway, so good idea this.
I am awaiting my IDE-CF adapater, and the 150X CF disk from USA. Probably another week, and I will start a new thread to give feedback wrt my progress.
Stay cool.

Updated Hardware Finished!!!
Well I spent the greater half of my saturday off to get all the hardware updates done. HOLY crap the xenarc is way harder to mount and is in more pieces than the super. But it's worth it, the xenarc is way brighter, crisper, and the 5 wire touchscreen interface is much more responsive. I like this way better. The LCD itself is HITATCHI. I spent a good 10 hours on mounting the TS, LCD, all the controller boards, then wiring it. Also got the flash drive adapter mounted. It was like doing this whole project over again because I had to move everything, drill more holes, figure out what will/won't fit. But its done. Now starts my favorite part. SOFTWARE!!! Ill keep ya updated on that. Embedded OS, welcome to your new home:

Yes, buy the correct blade for metal, and make sure to support the metal properly, both sides of the cut. This is important with <1mm sheeting, as it may deform/bend while cutting.
Soz for the off-topic

Yep A jig sure can cut sheet metal. A trick I use is to put 2" styrofoam underneath it to hold it on a plane while you make your cuts
