I was hoping to see an answer to the cigerate lighter question... also i have a Thinclient Pc that i will be using for this project, also does anyone have an idea of how to get power to a laptop ac power pack unit? since this is the type of power input for my thin client...

My 702 TSV is powered by either a power block, or a 12v Cigarette adapter. I can either plug it in directly, or cut the line and connect it directly to the 12V line.
As for the power to PC, a 12v voltage regulator should do it, or a 3 prong adapter from Radio Shack.

I've always powered mine from the 12v rail on the secondary (output) side of the M2 power supply. Never had any problems and the monitor goes on and off with the PC.
If you look on ebay I've seen DC > DC power supplies for laptops that run from 12v for cars. Just cut off the cig lighter attachment and hard wire it.
If all else fails get an inverter, it's dirty, inefficient, large, but hey it works!

I have 2 of those in my setup. It doesnt say how many I think its at 2.0 amps. I use one to power 2 USB hubs. One I plugged into the USB port the other I used the wall socket. The other inverter powers my powered VGA splitter, which doesnt run well off of the cars 12v power. I have to use the wall adapter to get it to work. These things are cool but pray that little fan doesnt come on, it is made very cheaply and sounds like it is broken but actually isnt. I have both of them under the seat and one day the fan turned on and i thought my PC was kicking the bucket, turns out it was the fan coming on, on the inverter.

Well, here's an update guys, been working on carPC v2 hardware and software.
Here are my new specs:
INTEL D945GCLF Mini-ITX MoBo ATOM processor
1Gb RAM
266x speed 4Gb PNY Optima PRO UDMA Compact Flash on the master IDE
M2 ATX
Microsoft mini GPS unit
Got most of the software done over the last week, and this setup is FAST! I mean lighting fast for loading apps. Cold boot to desktop in 20 seconds, shutdown clean in 3 seconds. Running minlogon, EWF and TinyXP R09 option 4. RR menus are near instant switching. I am also very happy with the PNY flash module, it's the first CF I've used that winXP see's as an actual harddrive, not removable, so I could use HORM if I decide to but I'm not a fan of hibernating. Also the first time I am running NTFS on flash with the write filter overlay, nothing negative so far. So this is going to be the base of my next system, i'll tell you what; in the 3 years since I began using the via m10000, this board is leaps and bound better in speed and performance. I attached some pics of the hardware on a temp chassis used so I could do the software config.
On another note, DDay for the mustang is fast approaching. . . Lease is up January 23! I removed the carPC this weekend, getting the vehicle back to stock condition which was the purpose of building the bolt in pc to begin with! So I am retiring the GEN-1 carPC from production use, perhaps ill use the screen for testing and sell off the via? I really want to try out a new LED backlit screen for the new setup.
This also brings up another question, what car to get now? I'm still debating about leasing or buying but I really like the new V8 dodge dakota! More to come on Complete Bolt In CPU/HD/PS/indash GEN-2

So what car do you plan on replacing it with? Another Mustang? I like the new one that has the nicer tail lights, I saw it on Knight Rider. I think its the 2010 model. They had it on this one episode where they needed to have a fake version of kitt, and they used the 2010 as his fake other.

That show is one of the worst things I have ever experienced. As soon as it is canceled, I know we'll see it dubbed in Spanish on telemundo!
BLK, your always on the bleeding edge of this crap... much admiration for you and your next project. Personally, I can't get over the new Tundra's... but I haven't seen them with the stock nav unit... my buddy has one with the stock stereo, and there isn't really a place to just slide in a PC like the fords have.
From Mustang to truck? hmmm... I don't know if I could do that. I need a hauler and something fast. ALthough I keep my wife on her toes by telling her I'm going to pimp a 1996 Toyota Previa.

Good luck getting it in a 2010 stang they have revamped the dash and it looks like you would have to do some major fab work to get a screen in that dash. on a side note my stang pc is still Running fast, i guess a duo core mobile proc was a bit much for the car pc lol
