if the sound card he is using is stereo (or even better 5.1) he *should* be able to control volume, and balance at least, from the carputer itself. fade could get a little trickier, but it also can be controled from the carputer. Just set the volume on the amp to always 90% (to be safe) and use built in volume control in the front end (or windows) for the rest

Thanks. I'm new to the audio stuff, so it's still something of a mystery to me. Right now, I'm trying to figure out how to do a Tivo-like capability with live audio (pause, instant replay). Skado says it can do it, but it starts dropping out after a while. I've got lots to learn yet...

This might sound really stupid but I have searched for the super touch screen you stated you used and found nothing. Who makes it? The reason I ask is my 2004 F150 has a dash very similar to the mustangs as far as double din and LOTS of space. My plan is to basically steal your design for my truck.
Also any problems with hooking into you factory radio harness as of yet? I have read on here that most people are against doing that for one reason or another.
Thanks,
Joe

FWIW I hook into the factory harness for all of the installs I have done. I have one Corvette with an aftermarket setup but the Hummer stuff that I have done is all through the factory wiring. I think the quality is very good. Is it super high end.. no, the goal is to come up with cost effective PC solutions without the cost of all new speakers and amplifiers. That being said.. you do have to use an amp with Vette stuff, but that wiring is from the amp to the factory stereo location.. the wiring to the speakers is still factory. I see no reason you cannot do it.

awesome thread
*** Nevermind I read your original post again and see that you used epoxy to do it.***
That is an awesome install and a great solution to the one thing that as delayed me all this time. I have a Titan and didn't want to do fiberglass work to get a screen in the dash. I would like to use your idea of mounting the screen to a dash kit. Would you please provide more detail on how you actually mounted the screen to the kit? Did you trim the bezel and glue it to the kit? or did you come up with a way to mount the screen itself to the kit like this ?

Yep that link is pretty much how i mounted mine. i cut the buttons off the front plastic bezel and mounted that bezel into the OEM trim kit. I like how it came out and taking apart the smal touchscreens takes patience. This is not an area to be rushed. Unless you dont care about dropping more cash on a new one. I paid $150 for this lightly used unopened touchscreen. Ive taken it completly apart and extended some of the wiring because of how i mounted the LCD / TS controller board. Not 1 problem since I got it. You need to take your time, my tool of choice on taking apart this screen is a gripster x-acto blade. Also this screen was found on ebay, shipped direct from hong kong from seller 'yuki'. My buddy paid 210 shipped, used it for a month but never took it apart, and then sold it to me for 150. good deal, good screen, come to think of it I wonder if any new drivers are available for the touchscreen. Egalax here I come
Oh yeah I forgot to add, I broke winamp 2.95 good, R.I.P. Im now running winamp 5.21

Because smaller laptop hard drives are built to handle more bumps/shocks? I thought of doing something similar, but right now my plan is to mount a tablet (touchscreen) laptop like a Fujitsu Stylistic.
Is the hard drive shockmounted or padded in some way? Otherwise I'd be concerned about its life expectancy. Of course, I could be completely offbase here and maybe the hard drive will last forever. Any problems so far?

So far I have it solid mounted in a .063 aluminum cradle. No problems at all so far. Clean skip free music, good GPS, ect. I went with a 3.5 because the components are bigger physically, and it does not have fluid bearings (fluid bearings are bad when you see below 30 degrees F) I also bought the drive new when i put it in (no second hands here) because thats how I do things. In two years or whatever when it starts 'chunking' along ill replace it with another new unit.

Very very nice install.
I think i will modify mine like yours. (you can see mine somewhere in the worklog). Never again i will go with a custom dash. So much work. And you put it back in the car doing fitment you have to bend the dash. when you screw it it not as flat as it was before. So my cutom dash now have little crack around the screen. . You've made the right choice.

Thanks enitalp!, Yes I really wanted something that could be installed and then later returned to OEM with little trouble. I read a lot about the fiberglass fabrication of dashboards but I decided I did not want to go that route as it seems kike A LOT of work and it does not hold up that well. Good luck with your new install, I know this method is still holding up PERFECT!

So blk, care to do some in-house screen mods for me? I'm trying to do something similar with my 2000 Audi S4. My bezel isn't a standard sized double din as it is larger but I'm hoping I can find a full size double din bezel to fill it in. Since you are relatively close to me, would you be able to match a screen up to that double-din bezel if I brought it to you? I think you have one of the best looking setups on here, and I'd like to be a copy cat as well.

Yeah man, ill help you out if you want/need the help. I love the S4 man, wonderful choice on the car, i've driven one and there are sooooo smooth. Get a LOT of looks in that car, even though its a sleeper. Hit me up on my cell 586-292-6022 if you want to meet up, I work a lot and go to school so my time is limited at the moment but if im in the area i would like to see your car and assist in any screen mounting

Cool, sounds good bro, when I get all the stuff together here I'll give you a call. Thanks for the compliments on the car, I love yours too. I just got rid of a Vortech Supercharged 01 GT a couple of months back for my S4. I really miss that thing, it was so obnoxiously loud and sounded like it had 900whp. I only had about 400whp but it was fun
But anyways back on topic, I've been thinking hard about my setup and with this damn Bose sound system it makes it a real pain in the *** to lose the stock HU. I'm PRAYING I can find a way to somehow have the stock head unit just pushed back about 3 inches and find a way to mount the LCD in front of it. That way I can just plug into the CD Changer jack on my factory deck with some RCA cables/adaptor and go that route. Otherwise I'll have to completely rewire everything in the car and honestly I'm like you, I work 65 hours a week and am finishing up school on top of having a 3 week old son. That makes for a busy schedule. Well I'll be doing more research and hopefully I can come up with something and maybe you can give me some insight into my problem Thanks for taking the time to reply, I'll talk to you soon.

I've got a 2001 Audi S4 as well, and I have been specifically watching this thread due to the strange double DIN Bose unit I am stuck with.
I don't want to turn this into an Audi S4 thread, but I wouldn't mind sharing some ideas. Perhaps start another thread?
