So I have my xenarc frame in my center console. I did the ABS sludge method, however I made the mistake of guessing my console was ABS, when in fact it's polypropylene, so nothing will stick to it.
Now, the screen IS securely mounted in the console, because the ABS sandwiches the PP on both sides in most areas. however, around the sides, (only around the bottom corners) the ABS separates from the PP when the console is flexed, and unfortunately the console must be flexed at least a bit during installation/removal in the car. I could just live with the slight crack/gap on the sides, but I had an idea that I wanted to run by some of you with more experience.
I was thinking that I could cover that entire section of the console (back to the seam you can see on the left side, and the identical one on the other side) with a layer of fiberglass; that way, any slight crack or separation in those areas would be covered by the fiberglass... pretty much just a "shell" over the whole thing. I am assuming that the fiberglass resin would bond to the ABS portion, keeping it in place. The seam in the plastic on the sides is deep and wide enough that I could go past it a little with the fiberglass, and then run a dremel cutting wheel through the group after to trim the edge to the seam. I would keep the glass off the area with the buttons, so I don't have to deal with shaping it around the button holes.
So... is this a reasonable idea? I've never glassed before, but I've got a friend who did it for a living for a while who will help me, and he seemed to think it was a good solution, I just wanted a second opinion or three.
