Cobalt Computer
I have a Cobalt SS and i also have the ampie car computer. I was wondering if anyone had a comment about the location of my computer. I was thinking about putting it behind the plastic on the side of my console.
Here is a pic:

the location is the boxed in area. I figured if i put it there it would be out of sight(view) and it would be easy to get to the LCD screen in the main part of the console. I also would like to know if i put it there with the ampie computer would it over-heat? Would it get to hot in there?
Here is a pic of the stock head unit where i would put the flip out screen:

Though it pertains to screens, it will give you a good idea:

Regarding overheating, just put a fan or two on the case and you should be good.
Since you didn't fill out your profile at all i can't know where you live and what kind of environment to expect this PC to be in.
IIRC, the Ampie case is essentially just a big heat sink, correct?

I believe so. And what are u saying about the fans?
Just get a CPU fan and put it near it or cut a hole in the plastic panel and put a fan there to pull the heat out. Is that what you are saying?

I would ideally go with a pushing fan and a pulling fan, just something to help circulate the air back there. A small computer case fan should work fine, something with silent technology preferably.

I have no idea what will fit in your situation, that's something that you need to figure out based on your needs.

Make sure the pulling fan flows LESS CFM than your pushing fan creating positive pressure. Think of this as the same as the thermostat in your car's cooling system. Constant air flowing past the components is good, but if there's no heatsink on the component, it's not as likely to transfer heat as efficiently as something with a sink. Giving the case positive pressure helps the air to hang around a while longer and pick up more hot air before being exhausted.

you could get identical fans and run one of them with a resistor (the pull fan). Just look for brushless fans, they tend to make less noise and last longer.

I've been wondering, would a ventury duct from the heating and cooling work well? If it's already going to be in the dash, may as well use the car's fan. Probably wouldn't be enough airflow. Just thinking out loud here...

I don't know that it would really be necessary though.

I was just thinking it would be waaaay quieter than most of the small fans I've been seeing here on the forums. I know in my Element the fan is never off, I usually keep it at the halfway point most of the time.

I plan on working on one in the next month. I know for a fact it will work good. I have seen multiple cobalts with the double din DVD player units, so I know that a Double Din TS will look good.
The area he posted on the passenger side floor is a little crowded for good ventalation, however on the driver side I believe there is more room.
For those that don't know the Battery in our Cobalts is located in the trunk spare tire well. So it would be more wire to locate it clear in the front.
I'm thinking on the driver side in the trunk, when you pull the carpet back like many cars is a vent and there is plenty of room plus if worst be the carpet will mold a little.
