I'm looking for thoughts on weatherproofing my backup camera. I want to mount it on the liftgate of my Subaru Forester pointing down at the back bumper.

If that is the case for your vehicle, you will need to install a fuse, voltage regulator, etc. to protect the camera) Water-proof without extra housing:

Reason: Ostentatiousness
Only the camera lense is waterproof without extra housing. The body needs to be protected if it is mounted outside the car.
Quote:
Water-proof without extra housing: for part (camera glass lens) exposed to outside ONLY and for normal usage ONLY. Camera body and cables are not designed to be exposed to outside and must be properly sealed against moisture.

why not just buid a box out of sheet mettal or something that's water tight? i just use some silicone to seal the corners let that dry and pop a camera into it... follow me? if you apply silicone properly i'll not come off and be water proof for sure... ever seen how they build fish tanks? all that's holding the glass together is that silicon and it withstands a ton of pressure and never leaks...
I read the description just fine. I misread his post. I thought he said he wanted to mount it in the lifgate instead of on the liftgate.
The G35s have a little box that's up near where the tag/trunk release is. You could get a project box from RadioShack for like $5 and get some weatherstripping and RTV silicone and you'll have a good start to a solution. I don't think neo magnets would mess with the camera (don't quote me on this) but you could use those inside the project box to hold it to your car (unless it's aluminum or fiberglass).
