Without using safe mode, windows will allow the .reg file to be created. The problem isn't *creating* the .reg file. The problem is that when you run the .reg file the shell doesn't change - it stays as explorer.exe!
@d_sellers: You obtained the same results that I did. I agree it must be some sort of built-in protection against a virus changing the shell to something unusable.
Any other ideas?

Thanks for your help.
The FALSE - FALSE indicators point out the status of the 2 checkboxes.
So "Pause Frodoplayer = FALSE" and "Minimize Frodoplayer = FALSE"

A friend of mine has a program that he was showing me that replaces the windows shell with a more Widgets-style shell. The neat thing about it is that it included a small program that easily allowed for the shell to be changed back and forth. Now the problem is, I don't remember the name of the progarm that he was using. I've been meaning to get back with him on it but I haven't seen him around (which is bad because he doesn't live very far).

I'm trying to find a way to load up a few programs on windows start; X Port which clones my serial port, gatso hunter (speed camera detector) and RR.
I have them all loaded from a .vbs file atm, but it won't work when I link to that as the shell.
Then I thought I'd try carshell- but I can't seem to d/l it from anywhere! http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/other-cool-stuff/58755-carshell-v2.html

You know what may work better than the .vbs? Try making an AutoIt script. AutoIt scripts can be used to automate damn near anything. Unfortunately it may be a pain in the *** to get it to work just right. You can get it from here. It's available in an installable version and standalone. Plus, the script file (.au3) can be saved as a .exe using the included .au3>.exe converter.
Hmmm, I wonder if a script can make the change... AutoIt v3 does have registry reading (not sure about writing) capabilities. I'll look more into it and see what I can find out. Perhaps then we can get around the .reg shell protection.

I'll try it out- Thanks.
Hopefully if a set of startup commands can be set in the .exe it should be possible to run all the programs and services which one needs on the carputer just without explorer.
While googling I came across a whole lot on shells. I didn't know that there are many alternatives to explorer out there- both free and paid for. You could, for example pretty much clone a mac's desktop and have it as a shell. Was looking for suitable ones for carputers- which would require minimal resources and still have a systray.
Carshell is a good idea, but it lacks the ability for me to customize it to the way I would want it.

My lilliput installed a set of invisible cursors. Just switched to them in mouse options.

There is also a way to do this without hacking your registry
START > RUN > GPEDIT.MSC > USER CONFIGURATION > ADMINISTRATIVE TEMPLATES > SYSTEM > CUSTOM USER INTERFACE >
This will pop up a dialog, click 'Enabled'
Then under the enabled selection there is a field, put your shell path in that file.
example C:/program files/frodoplayer/frodoplayer.exe
Also there are many goodies in the group policy (gpedit.msc) Like startup / shutdown options
enjoy

If you did it the regedit change you explorer.exe way what you have to do is this? Minimize your front end. Hit Cntrl/Alt/Delete and go to File then select new task. Go to regedit and change it back to explorer.exe and your back.

A question..
I had it so it booted up directly to my front end, the problem is I dont use GPRS so i have to search for networks (like the one at my house) and connect before I can use the internet. Is there anyway to use network connections to search for connections and choose one directly from frodoplayer. Also, since I re-enabled it to start explorer.exe instead of frodoplayer when I boot up, is there a way to have it so FrodoPlayer starts up with the computer (like a program in msconfig under the startup tab for example) while still have windows in the background? Thanks!
EDIT: I did it you guys, I'll post a FAQ on it right now and God willing it'll help others.
