FAQ Tutorial: Wire/Pin Mod for Mobile Athlon

(This possibly belongs in the FAQ section, I wasn't sure. Mods feel free to move it needed)

As you all know that the Mobile Athlon Processor runs at its default clock speed of 800 MHz on most motherboard that support the chip. This mod is used to make the motherboard recognize the processor at its correct speed.

How hard is the pin mod?
Is it reversible?
Do you have any pictures of the mod?

I've been asked these questions many times. And to answer them:

Very Simple
Yes
Yes (well now I do)

I was redoing the mod on my board and decided to take some pics (warnig: I'm not the best photographer) and write a small tutorial. Hope this helps the people who are considering the Asus A7N8X motherboard. So here goes.

Oh forgot the disclaimer, This mod is to be done at your own risk. I do not take any responsibly if anything goes wrong. It worked fine for me with out a problem, hopefully you won't have any either.

Tools/Supplies:
  • Thin wire, I used 20 awg speaker.
  • Tweezers
  • Wire cutter (optional) I used my teeth
  • Mobile Athlon compatible motherboard.

Process:

1) Go to this site and get your diagram for the wire mod.

http://www.ocinside.de/go_e.html?/ht...md_pinmod.html

Choose socket view and AMD Barton (Make this setting according to the chip you have, either Barton, T-Bred or Athlon XP). Leave the Vcore selection to the default, unless you want to mess around with it. For this example I choose 200 MHz for the FSB and 9.5 X FSB for the Multiplier selection. The multipler selection is based on the chip you are using. When you select the FSB and the multiplier the rating of the chip is displayed in the last box. This should be the same as the chip your are using. Of course you can over/under clock the chip to your liking.
So if you’re following along you should have this diagram.

2) Take your wire and pull out one strand from it, so you have one really thin piece of wire.

3) Cut a piece off the long wire so that is long enough just to fit in two holes. I cut the wire into 1/4" pieces. Here a picture of the size of the wire I used. Btw, that's a hard drive screw in the picture. (Just for your reference)

4) Take the small wire and curve it into a U shape, using the tweezers at this point helps.

5) Take the wire with the tweezers and position it on top of the holes it belongs in. It’s a little tricky at first, but after a couple of tries, the wire seems to fall in by itself.

Here are the pictures of the final product.

If there are any mistakes or if something is unclear, please let me know.

EDIT:
Those that are worried about doing the mod, I just like to add that I did a Prime95 torture test on my system after the mod. And after 3+ hours not one single problem or warning.

what about booting up at 800mhz and then force it to the clock you like by software? I always to it and it rocks, I force it to 600mhz 0.95v on general purpose and switch it to 1ghz 1.1v when I need more power

That is a perfect solution, but this particular mobo Asus A7N8X-VM doesn't work so well with software solution.
I crawling the web for some easier solution, but end up with wire mod is the only solution for this board (time may change).
Nice write up Quattro

No problem on the write up. I hope people will see that its a really easy mod and that they don't have to be worried too much.

Quick question. Where did u get the 9.5x from? Is this based to give u the 1900MHz speed to match your chip? I ask because I'm looking to get the XP-M 2200+, so I assume I would go with the 11.0x to get the 2200. Seems logical but I have been wrong before (it was 1986....nevermind). Seriously nice find and write up. Thanks for the efforts.

Yes the Multiplier selection is based on your processors speed. (will edit first post)
So if you have a Mobile 2200+ you would make the multiplier 9 if your using 200 FSB. It all depends on what you want the processor to run at. If you using it for your desktop, then mobile athlons make great overclocker chips. If your using it for your car you can underclock it help cut down on the amount of power used.

Well, because usually a hardware mod is better and more stable than a software mod.

I've got a 2200+ in this computer (regular desktop) and I unlocked it by jumping some (L5 ? Been a while) pin because my mobo doesn't unlock the multipliers.

I'd put more faith in a hardware mod personally.

My pin mod worked perfectly using a SHuttle SN41G2 and an AthlonXP-M 2400+ 35w.
There is nowhere I can see to force it down to 1.35v, so I went with the lowest available, which is 1.475v. It runs perfectly.

I also pilled the thin strands of wire from a floppy drive cable I cut up.
