I got my computer from my dads school where they were dismantling all their old ones. But I am still looking at $700 all up

Being Aussie adds a couple of hundred though

I have used several versions for my carpc and to be honest they dont add up to $500 all together.

First setup included a CRT monitor in the passenger seat (with an old pc which was free) This was a LONG TIME AGO 1996-1997 era

Second setup Norand Touchscreen 133 (was $75 shipped from ebay)
Had built in GPS but I had to purchase a PCMCIA Soundcard ($30 shipped)

So far up to $110

New system
Dell Laptop (currently on a homemade jotto desk style mount in the truck).
Laptop cost $200 and the Stand was approx $20 (for parts)

GPS Unit with Iguidence $50 shipped
802.11 PCMCIA card $10 shipped

Total is $390.00

Laptop is getting stripped and will be inset into the dash soon (I have to make sure the truck is going to make it through the year. Tranny is acting a bit funny). But in the end thats how you get 3 complete setups for under $500

c-ya

To keep this a FAQ-ish type thread, I'll provide some help (warning?) to newbies...

This turns into a money-pit hobby real quick. It's never done, there's always something more to spend money on. But, it's a lot of fun.

I'm up around 1200 or so. 3 versions. various prototypes and stuff that just flat out didn't work out but cost me money. I am still not done and really don't ever see a definitive set amount I will end up paying.

Well its cost me so far about 800 including the screen (lilli) i dont have a dvd burner, gps, xm radio, or am/fm radio yet, so i think it'll be more closer to 1300 by the time im done, its well worth it though.

I think the more RIGHT you do it, the more its gonna cost. I'd rather pay more for a tits setup.

oh and yes, this site is awesome, definitely would have cost alot more if it wasnt for the wealth of knowledge this site has to offer, leave all the trial and error to someone else.. That'll save you money. This website has enabled me to build my carputer the first time, right.

I bought a $1200 screen that wasn't compatible with my system so I was in the hole right from the start. I'm a perfect example of why you should .
