i agree with all of this. i have not looked into what kind of speakers i will run, but as far as the subs go, i will either run those new pioneer premier shallow subs for the space saving, or some digital designs subs that are manufactured right here in okc. i shopped around for a audigy nx 2 on ebay. and finally won one without being outbid at the last second. and its all being run through a jenson 4 channel amp @ 840 W. its not being run on stock speakers. these are some pioneers that the previous owner installed.
and to seventynine, if i had your knowlage, a mechanical and electronic engineers knowlage, the money, and the tools n parts, i would do my darndest to prove you wrong. or make that good enough sounding vehical. but thats just me. i like to show that i can do what seems to be un-doable.
ok, lets keep talking how many paycheck we blew for our car/truckputers and not turn this into a flame.

sorry to go OT, but the basics of it are........thin sheet metal vs big thick walls.........nice big cube vs funny tiny space.........
the principle acoustic issue is that soundwavess hit stuff and reflect (in a cars case, all over the shop and in no order due to it being a funny shape and TINY) or create sympathetic resonance (making the thing they hit become a speaker, in a cars case, very easily even if you stick half an inch of sound deadening pads on every surface) - both of these are going to happen a LOT more than in a room.
those are just in a drop of an ocean of problems you get with car audiom then theres the phase issues with sticking loads of speakers in your car (more than 2 + sub), bass traps, acoustic floors, i could go on.

Hoookaayyy...........
we all know the car is a bad enviroment for good sound in the first place. You're not telling us anything new here.
You don't want to spend cash on your auto for decent sound, that's okay. You want to spend all you cash on the house, that's okay too.
Just as someone may want to spend all thier money on thier car.
Me? I spend alot of time in my vehicle. I like good sound. Seems to make sense to spend a bit of cash to make my living enviroment more pleasant to be in. There's nothing wrong with pursuing better sound in the car. It's more difficult and it costs more. So what? That's what floats some people's boats........
I like good sound when I'm watching a movie at home. Spent a fair bit of cash to get it. I also spent a fair bit of cash on a 42" plasma.
My point is that's a different application from the vehicle. Apples and oranges.........
Takes all kinds brothers and sisters.
Now, can we please get back to the original topic?
Cheers

greatwhite, well said. seventynine, all the negatives you pointed out about a car install is exactly WHY you need to put a lot into a car stereo to begin with if you DO want great sound.
your priorities are something diferent than the priorities of others, & your ambishions are different from the ambishions of others, no one is here telling you your wasting your time rebuilding a dead beat up car that should be scrapped when you could buy a car that is better in every way, so there is no reason for you to knock others own goals, priorities & ambishions either.
this is not the place to discuss what can & can't be done in car audio, for your views to be gospel then there are many many thousands of people & whole industries built around something that you say is a waste of time..

i just spent some more $$ on my system. a steering wheel with audio controls from a 01 blazer, airbag cover and airbag module. an audigy nx 2, and next will be a controller for those steering wheel controls once i test em to see how they work or if they use a module that outputs the signal. i want to get the HQCT, but thats damn pricey! and probably well worth it. the company that makes those have a model with RCA's for the in/outputs. i want that one, but its almost 300! sigh......my insurance is a bit higher than that. 321 full coverage...........

I just bought $0.99 worth of wood screws to hold my sirius unit in place by more than 1 screw.
They are still in the Home Depot bag though.

Go get an HD radio (Visteon) off ebay for around 50 bucks and mitch's patch cable for around 25.
It does am/fm HD, AM/FM analog and rds.
I've got one and it's great! Super easy install too.
RR supports it and most of the "big" skins have incorporated it already.
Mitch's cables are "flying out the door" though.............
