Simple and works fine for me!
Yeah, but that doesn't test your PSU, only the PC hardware.

Hmmm, DP, I'm not sure I understand how you mean it "doesn't test your psu".
12v battery to the dsatx and she fires up and shuts down with a connection simulating acc. Seems that would be a better test of the DC-DC psu as that's what it'll be running off in the car.
But yes, I use the atx power supply when I want to do extended testing on the os or a complete reload in the house. Just seems more conveineint to me.
I guess I just don't see the point of hacking up an atx supply to get what you would from a battery which would be more realistic of a test.
Different strokes I 'spose..............
Maybe I'm missing something here?

well i tried this out today and it fired up perfecty fine for the first time in my build.
i used a battery charger i have in my garage.
this is the one: here
NEG and POS off my m2-atx to the proper clamps on to the battery charger. On the ACC line i wired in a switch and then connected it to the POS on the charger also.
i tried it on the 5amp setting first but it wouldnt start up. it would try but then turn off. i switched it to the 15amp and it fired up fine. i started/shutdown using the switch 3 times with no problem.

Connecting the ATX power supply right to the motherboard of your carPC doesn't test your DC-DC PSU.
I should have been more clear.

Not everyone has a battery charger at their disposal, but yours is a good idea.
You can also use a spare car battery. Again, not everyone has a spare car battery.
Some have 12v power supplies that put out enough amperage to power their vehicle computer. Again, it's something that not everyone has.
Granted, not everyone has a spare ATX PSU lying around either...
Most PC geeks (like myself and many others on this forum) tend to have PC parts about, including a PSU.
Understand that this FAQ was written up as a CHEAP way to power your PC inside. It's also a cheap way to do it using stuff that some people may already have.

This is an amazing "how to" took me about 10 mins to set up (and that included finding wires and connectors in the toolbox!)
Thanks guys.

I have a radio shack AC to DC converter. Will that work It only has a - and + Termnial. Can provide a constant 25amps if needed and provides 13.8v.
Will that work. Its been to run car amps in my home before?

For the people who are finding that their 12V rail is only putting out 8-9V, this can sometimes be caused by not having a load on the 5V rail.
Some power supplies will not run correctly if there is only a load on the 12V rail, and nothing on the 5V
If you get this problem, try taking one of the spare molex connectors, and just plug in an old spare hard drive, or CDROM.
I have been using AT and ATX power supplies for some of my networkable garden lighting project, and some supplies are happy to just have a draw on the 12V rail, but some wouldn't work unless there was a current draw on the 5V rail as well.
So give it a bash, see how it goes with a spare hard drive plugged in!

How do I wire up the switch to simulate turning the car on and off?
Can someone post a detailed pic?
I saw Vlads, and sorta understand it, but I'm not sure what terminal I connect the white wire off the M2-ATX to and then what wire I tap into off the the ATX PSU.
Any help would be appreciated.

I used a momentary switch from a PC. The switch has three pins. One is four voltage in, one for voltage out and one for ground, I'm pretty sure. Since this is in-line with the power, you don't need a ground wired up. You're just using this as a simple switch to close the connection on a +12v line.

i used my trunk switch for a push button for the opus. Gotta use a key now to open my trunk. When i build a new clear case for my rig i'll return the trunk button to its original use and install a new momentary switch.

What am I doing wrong?
I've got a Rosewill 400Watt PSU that I'm trying to use to power the M4-ATX.
I've got a male molex hacked into my "ignition" switch.
It has 12V, Accessory, and Ground.
I tried running it several different ways I could think of but in no scenario would it start the computer up.
The D2 light will blink when the desktop PSU is on, which from what I've learned is that this is the "standby" light.
The light on the switch will come on when I flip it on, the computer will not boot though.
1) I've got the 12V from male molex into 12V on the switch, and a wire from 12V to positive M4.
2) I've got the ground from male molex into ground on the switch, and a wire from ground to ground on M4.
3) I've got accessory from the switch to ignition on the M4-ATX.
Flip the switch, blue LED comes on, no boot though.
Advice?
