jpinkerton is on a distinguished road
With only 15Amp on the 12V that's my problem.

The PSU in my desktop PC has 52amp on the 12V. I'm going to rip that one out of there and see if it works.

Another Method

For those that can't get this to work and wanted another quick check for their power supply. I successfully booted my M4-ATX and computer using a cordless drill battery (18V). It keeps my computer running for 20-30 mins before the M4 soft shuts the computer down (voltage gets low). Obviously test the leads on your own battery but on my Dewalt the rear lead is negative and the front is positive.

Battery reads around 20v without any load from it and about 14 when the M4 is powered.

I am using a 24 pin atx psu for my workbench. I found some pinouts online but I dont think they were the same, so Ive had to leave it plugged into another mobo.

Anyone out there know the pins needed to "jumpstart" the psu?

A 24pin is exactly the same as a 20pin + a 4pin extension. Most good quality and up actually have the 4pin extension detachable.

So it is still pin 14 shorted to ground.

I have a Radio Shack power supply that will give me 13.8 volts and 3 amps.

Is 3 amps enough?

3A * 13.8V = 41.4W [Watts] at 100% efficiency. Usually those are 85% to 75% efficient, so you really have 31W.

So if you are running less than 31W worth of stuff, you should be ok. Otherwise, no.
