Automated volume based on vehicle speed.

Some of the fancier cars like Mercedes have a feature where if the car is going a certain speed, it turns the stereo volume up to compensate for road noise. Subsequently, reduced speeds lowers the volume. This would be a really nifty feature to have in one of the media players.

Wishful thinking...I know.

you would likely need to tap OBD for that - or possibly use some data coming from a GPS receiver that could track your speed.

When the plugin interface is finished, this feature could easily be added.

Hows the plugin interface coming? Any updates on when the next release for fp will be out? and will the plugin interface be available on the next release?

The plugin interface is scheduled for release after next.

The next release will be sometime in the next 3 weeks.

I have an OBDII scanner, but it's very proprietary. I doubt I could use it unless the vender lent me a hand. The GPS sounds like a cool alternative. That's probably the best solution. Too bad I'm not a programmer or I'd tackle it myself.

And some of the not so fancy cars, like my Chevy Malibu....It's called SCV, speed compensated volume.

Pulling the speed over OBDII is easy... (provided you have the hardware of course...)

No you dont....
My VDO Dayton 4403 has this Speed Dependent Volume Control (SDVC) option and its connected to my car via one wire wich goes to speedometer.
Allmost every car has it nowdays allready (i think), but if it dont, the vdo seller said it is easily added to injection system somehow, but some service place tells more about it.

My car has the signal cable under dashboard allready and its easy to connect to stereosystem or carputer from there...

But anyway this signal could easily readed with simple interface to paraller/serial.. Somebody who knows better could explain...

My English sucks so i cannot explain this better...

I have a JVC chamelion that had volume control by monitoring the ACC power line. (Alternator noise frequency, I guess.)

Is it actually done according to speed? In a friends truck it had a feature where it turned itself up (freaked us out at first), but it was a nosie thing. If the surrounding noise level went up the stereo would turn up. I guess that goes along with driving faster (wind noise and engine noise).

just curious

I do something similar with OBD-II and it works great. GPS had too much delay in response. I've made a mess of it, but here's the what it looks like in JScript at the moment. From 30 down to 5 is an even 50% drop in volume...

vol = Reg.Volume // User set volume
speed = OBD.Speed // current speed in MPH
low = 5 // volume drop range is 30MPH down to 5
high = 30
percentdrop = 50 // percentage to drop over range

if(speed < high){
speed -= low
if(speed < 0) speed = 0
// 1 mph drop increment = range / (volume * percent / 100 )
inc = (high - low) / ( vol * percentdrop / 100)
vol = Math.floor( vol - (high * inc) + (speed * inc) )
if(vol < 1) vol = 1
}
Mixer.Volume = vol

The easiest way IMO would be having destinator / routis etc setting the volume
