Can FB control a HU

I was wondering if this would be an easy way to get am/fm, HD, or xm on the car pc. Get a HU that is compatible with am/fm, etc, put in your trunk, and then use the FB to control the HU remotely. Maybe get a HU with a removable faceplate and run the I/O wires from the FB to the faceplate contacts on HU unit?

that would work, except that every faceplate is different and we do not offer and custom adapters or support for such an installation.

in short: yes, you could do it, but you'd have a lot of work ahead of you.

The biggest headache I see with this is the data transfer between the HU and the computer. FB doesn't do serial or the like. Sure, you can press the buttons remotely, but what are you doing? How will you know when you get there? The way I see it, you would be flying blind. The serial connections for units are going to be your best bet. There are several options available to you that are well covered in these forums, I know of at least one real promising one for HD radio, and it's pretty inexpensive.

Guesse I didn't realize how complicated it would be. I thought it you could use the outputs on the FB for the buttons on the HU and use the inputs on the FB for the LCD screen outputs on the HU, then just design a skin for it.

h3rk: Do you have a link to the threads you mentioned, I've been searching but I can't find them.

HQCT
Hardware Development thread, but can be obtained at MP3CAR normally out of stock at the moment.
Software Development for HQCT

VISTEON HDZ300 or DIRECTED DMHD1000
Get this cable, and get a unit off of ebay and you are rolling, my friend.

Boomzbox (SD)
This is still in beta, I believe, but will be Streetdeck friendly

There are more threads on these products, but these should give you plenty of ammo to load into your search button.
