Ok i built an simple serial infrared receiver but it does'nt work with presision...
I asked before and the reply was that it did'nt workm because i built one without a eeprom. My problem is i cant build one that uses an eeprom because i dont have an eeprome programer
Were can i buy one online for under $20 ???

I bought a serial adapting infrared receiver from: http://ir2pc.cjb.net/
I cannot get it to work on the via epia 5000 mini itx board that i am doing my project on. It works fin with my other 2 computers though and i have got it to work with 3 different remotes that are just lying around my house. this thing is really small and works in both windows and dos.... it mimics key presses on the keyboard you set what buttons on the remote you want to push what keys on the keyboard with.

You should try usin "serial watcher" and see if your getting anything when you press keys on your remoe. Also try using your com port with somethingelse to see if it works.

ok i got it figured out ... its been about a week since i first tried this module.... it is incompatible with vias com port in specific... here is a link on how to fix the conflict:
http://www.traffic-eye.de/FLI4L/sat-mediabox/
but its in german... I have done some soldering and wiring before but i cant read german... This site has a schematic but i dont really understand it... please if anyone that can read german is reading this help me out. Im sure whatever i have to do is relatively easy... i just dont know what to do.
thanks

My German isnt great, but from what I can make out you need to modify using that schematic, and program an eeprom to work with the VIA chipset. The file to program is available to download in a zip file. You need need a programmer to do this.

/me ordered 2 of the remotes (me and a friend of mine need one).. great find by the way
I also say these usb->rj45 converters for $3.95 !
I ordered all 3 off them left in stock.. these things always come in handy and cost at least 7 times as much here !
