I've had 3 in the past couple days. Didn't even think about opening it. But I am surprised that my virus software didn't catch it. I download crap almost 24/7 (196 Gigs in 3 months) and Norton 2K1 stops 99.5% of the virus I get (Besides a stupid Bymer virus I keep getting). Thanks for sending the warning out mp3ford.

I get these occasionally.

I use a unix mail client on a unix system, which never automatically touches attachments and isn't vulnerable to Windows viruses anyway.

If anyone sends me an attachment, unless I know who they are and trust them, and their ability to protect themselves, I don't trust the file.

There's very little reason for anyone to email files these days.

I don't think it was specific.. I work for a ISP and we've gotten probably 40 different variants of this message.. One with UPS shipping in, some with HTML references.. all kinds of nonsense..

I've gotten 2 of the Sound card ones, and one in spanish..

I read my mail in Pine (a Unix Mail client) no risk for me..

I opened them in outlook express...... not the attachements, just the email body..... did a virus scan afterwards nothin.... so I guess the bad stuff was in exec the attachment.....

If joe blow sends me an attachment and I don't know him at that point I would be quite cautious to be running it.....

hey,

just read this link on slashdot.org...
http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/zd/2001...riters__1.html

looks like the e-mails were a virus..... I guess we all got on some ppl's mailing list....

was weird tho, since the titles of the attachments were about sound cards..... big area of our mp3car.com system...

and another....
http://news.cnet.com/news/0-1003-200...html?tag=tp_pr

this one goes on to say that in addition to getting e-mail addresses from the address book - it can get emails from a users internet browser cache. thus if the user visited parts of this bbs/mp3car websites our email addresses could have come from there......

Good thing my email is all backed up. I got word of it before I got a chance to read emails. Deleted and I am safe! Yea!

I got this in my Juno account too... I was wondering what the heck it was, and I thought it was another spam or something.

And whats with the attached blank text file? I opened THAT but not the "Hi my name is crazy long filename.xls.pif" file.

as someone said previously, I dont think this was targetted at just mp3car users. I work for a cash register company and one of the distributors we use called me up and said dont open any files you get from me cause she had been hit w/ a worm virus. Told me about the file extension being something.pif. i checked my work email and nothing came up but then decided to check my personal email and found an email from Sue Reynolds (????) with the subject line being "Condolenses" (sp?) and saw it had an attachment of 209k. Then I read the mail and it said "I need your advice" as someone mentioned before, and luckily I remembered and deleted. But the file was condolenses.doc.pif. Of course I dont believe a .pif file is 209k considering its just a shortcut. But anyway, just passing this along to everyone.
