New product coming out! $199 7" laptop - Asus Eee PC
Runs linux, comes with just 4GB of flash memory for the OS, boots in ~15sec, plenty of ports, perfect size. All in the cost of a Liliput - I wish the damn thing came out before I spent 3x that on my system...

There'll also be a 10" version for another $100. Should be available this fall.

Runs XP too, just doesn't come with it.
512K RAM, GBs of flash. Should run RR & iGuidance OK. A USB hard drive could be used for storage for music etc. It looks like it has a barrel power connector, this will probably be 12v or 19v. A Carnetix power supply could run this in the car. It has a VGA socket to connect to a 7" screen too.
I see potential for this as a low-end system.

I happen to like low end hardware running high end software
I could create an OS image that would make that mini laptop scream.
Subscribed, I also have my eye on another high end ASUS laptop that is barebones. My slackware linux desktop runs an ASUS board also. Very good hardware from my experiences.

MicroXP, TinyXP or other slimed OSes would smoke on it.
Could go older, but MicroXP at under 28megs usage can make old systems fly just fine. However if it's mp3/video and not much else, you could also do Damn Small Linux. I'd personally test both out, to see which is best for you.

it also was announced at a price of 299 or 399, which is drastically different than the headline of this thread

Yea, probably should start a dedicated discussion, or see if the title can be amended.

well its out....and nothing is true
"Runs linux, comes with just 4GB of flash memory for the OS, boots in ~15sec, plenty of ports, perfect size. All in the cost of a Liliput - "
it runs a custom linux environment with a customized KDE desktop with no power user options. It take 30 seconds to boot. and costs $399....for the 4gb version. Only 512 megs of ram. Doubt the 10" version will come out anytime soon....and at $499....might as well just buy a cheap laptop on black friday with some more power and more upgrade options.

Yeah it's not quite as good as promised, but still cheap for an ultra-portable of that size.

I have ordered my eeepc 7" 4gb and will load minimal XP and Streetdeck .. and report back on it's performance if anyone is interested. (in a separate thread).
Despite it not living up to it's original expectatons, it's still ultra low power, powerful enough to run our favorite frontends, and a viable solution for carpcs. Obviously it fits into the laptop category rather than a dedicated dc powered carpc, but again.. . I think many people will want to see how this does the job!

I managed to have a quick play with one of these today.
15 sec boot from full power off to useable GUI
5 sec boot from hibernation
Bundled Linux OS is quick and easy to use. LCD display is nice. Case is good. The keyboard and the left/right mouse button are the main area's i feel could have been improved uppon (the feel cheap).
Once the price on these drop I'd highly recomend them to all my friends who do a lot of travelling.
As for CarPC use - all depends on what you need it to do - no touch screen is a bit of a let down, but the expanision options are good.

according to this article, ASUS is coming out with a touchscreen model later this year (although it appears that only the 9" model which have it).
I have an EeePC 701 4G. I didn't buy it to use in my car, but it has many good features that make it pretty well suited for use as a carPC...
1. the first thing is it's low power use, it runs on 9.5v @2.3amps (and most of that current goes to charging the battery, without the battery it will use a lot less)
2. the second great feature is it's SSD. 4GB isn't much, but it's great for loading an nLited XP and some programs. you can use flash memory for MP3 storage
3. it has a built-in SDHC card slot. get a 16GB card and you've got a 20GB solid state system for under $500
4. it has a 7" screen and a VGA output. if you don't want a touchscreen then you can use the built in screen in your dash. if you want a touchscreen then it'll likely cost at least $120 to add one, so it's still worth it to buy an external touchscreen monitor.
5. it has 3 external USB ports which enough for your touchscreen, GPS mouse, and bluetooth dongle. you can use the webcam input as another USB, or use the USB from the mini-PCIe slot inside, giving you 5 pc-powered USB
yes it has lots of potential to be modded. but it's already a good option right out of the box. and for people who don't want to mod their dash, then it's small enough to be used as-is (just mount it to a bracket off the console, etc). :/
