Questions, Questions, Questions...

I currently own a 1982 Golf MK1 and i would like to put a car pc into it. I have already got the main system, but i would like to add a few other things.

Is it possible to make some kind of physical hotkey button on the dash to jump to different pages in road runner?

Have sensors to 'sence' (lol) whether a door is open? Either make new or use existing switches.

That's it for now...

Thanks!

Most of the front ends were designed for use with a touchscreen.

However back in the day (and some still do...) a remote control with the GIRDER software would run the machine...a button press to simulate keyboard commands.

Other people made custom keyboards etc.

If you look through the RR docs you may find what you are looking for.

Depending on your electronic skills this should be fairly easy. I assume that your Golf already has the door switches (I am not familiar with the Mk1 since I own a Mk4), so you could use those. However, be careful with the power. I doubt that you can run an additional cable or tap the existing one right into your PC hardware, as the 12V would kill your board. What do you want to happen when the door is open?
Making new ones and using those will be easier, since you don't need to worry about the power and the risk of killing your electronics.

The best way to go about this is to use a digital card that gives you x-numbers of digital inputs and outputs. this would make life easier since you could run a cable into the extension board and the PC would know that the door is open or closed depending on the state of the switch.
The boards exist in several different styles (USB, PCI, etc) so the choice is yours. The usually cost around 40€ (sorry, I am European, so dunno about dollars).
Hope that solves some of the problems. I ll keep an eye on this post, so keep "posting"

Search for fusion brain on this board. That should let you do whatever you want with the door switches.
