Cant you turn on the PC without using the ignition? I know the carnetix can use pulse start. So you can unlock the doors and have that signal be the pulse start on your computer. This way the computer will be off when the car is off and the computer will be on before you get into the car.

I am thinking that the steering lock COULD be eliminated, HOWEVER read below

I once lost my keys out of my grand prix (2003) so i had to hotwire it, i still had the key remote so i got in the car, one of the steps in the hotwire process was using a screwdriver (flathead" to break the locking pin in the steering wheel, PLEASE REMEMBER this will permanently stop the lock wheel function, and some people may not want to do this) but once i got my dash down i got my wires and had my car started and driving in 10 minutes, no steering lock, just adding that in!

I'm also looking into starting car via fingerprint my approach is separate from the real PC.

I have a Sheeva Plug which is a computer the size of a wall wart power supply. It draws just over 4 watts which allows me to run it off of my 80 AH battery for 240 hours or 10 days. I will definitely start my car at some point within 10 days, so battery drain will be nowhere near a problem. So I intend to keep this thing on at all times ready to catch the fingerprint.

Many car alarms have extra buttons that can be configured as needed. Alternatively you could have a relay from your locks or lights (activated via key fob) switch on the power to your computer so that it boots before you open the door. You might have to get creative with batteries if you want to separated it electrically when you engage the starter.

A home alarm 12v battery in the trunk would probably be enough juice to run the computer for a few minutes, you could rig up a charging circuit to recharge that battery while you drive.
