XM controlled through rs232 and GPS through rs232

Alrighty then.

Reading, and reading, and reading. Many posts about problems with USB devices working properly after coming out of hibernate/standby.

Was looking to circumvent the intermediary step of putting a device on a USB connection and running a port emulator to make it look like a com port.

So what I've been looking for is:

1) A good GPS antenna (possibly a BU 353) that connects to the PC through the Com port.

2) A cable (manufactured, dont wanna make one) that will let me control my XM tuner (an old xmd 1000 type) through the PC (front end) via a com port.

Searched here, googled, nada ., . .

Anyone have any ideas ? Am I barking up an imaginary tree ?

Should I just ignore all the complaints and just run them through the USB?

Just run them through USB. It's easier & cheaper. The COM port as we know it is going away.
There are serial GPS units out there. I believe the BU303 is serial.

Most of the complaints you read are from people who aren't turning off power management on USB hubs and/or leave the option to have a USB device resume the system form standby, causing problems.

Yup, looks like thats the way Im gonna have to go for now.
At this point, the only thing that will have to be on the USB is the GPS and XM, so I should be able to get away with running them from the USB ports on the MB (obviating the need for a hub).
Someone referred me to a product with a PS2 connector on another thread, while I appreciate that, I think it involves an additional harness and more drivers, so not sure if any better than USB solution.

You're probably right, it will probably just work itself out without a problem.
You just get the impression that "nothing works" from reading the posts, because people tend to only post when they have a problem

Thanks Darqe <== (or if thats too familiar, I could use "Mr. Pervert" ?)

Either is fine, really.
And you're quite welcome.
