-play xm thru the line-in. HD radio is not powered unless i'm listening to hd radio
-play hd radio by first muting the xmd1000 then powering on the hd radio

my only fear is that using a splitter will cause some kinda voltage issue. I dont want the voltage on the line from the xm goin back into the hd radio tuner. My original question was will that happen.

Ahhh...I gotcha. I really don't think that you are going to have a voltage issue. I have hooked up two devices in the manner you are describing with no problems at all on several different occasions.

Honestly though, I would just use a switchbox and be on the absolute safe side. I know it isn't as automated as you want, but it will work, and no questions about voltage problems...either that or the uber-expensive sound card option...

ok here's another sound card option (i think)

http://www.compumusic.com/p31235.htm

maya 44 usb, has 4 inputs and 4 outputs.. i've been reading reviews and basically the only negative i can find is that it doesnt use 24-bit dac's. I dont even know if the sb live i have does that though. I only wonder if the 4 outputs are made for 5.1/7.1 sound. Notta HUGE deal to me either way but i just wonder how it will hook up to all speakers in my setup.

I don't believe that the inputs are made for 5.1/7.1 at all. In fact the inputs aren't even stereo, they are mono, so you REALLY only get 2 inputs stereo. This really looks like more of a recording card than a sound card, I don't know how that will end up working out with your setup. If you kept your current soundcard and just used this for the inputs, I think your'd have something....
