VIA EPIA and the UIR

After building my Mark II carputer and hooking up my UIR, I was surprised to find it didn't work ! The UIR was giving the correct initialisation sequence ('I' 'R' followed by 'O' 'K'), but would not send any decoded IR signals.

The solution comes down to the serial port on the EPIA. Like most laptops, the serial port on this mobo only puts out +5V for a high, while most desktops put out +12V for a high. The RS232 spec says +5V to +15V is acceptable.

Trouble is, the UIR takes power off the serial port and needs at least about 6v to function.

Simple solution - replace the 100k resistor that comes off the two diodes on the UIR with a wire link. People were talking about changing it down to 470ohms on the UIR mailing list, but that didn't help for my EPIA. Your mileage may vary -- be careful that you could damage your serial port, too. But mine's running ok

Spud.
