Question Hooking up amp question REM line

I have a question about hookin up the amp I just purchased. Its a Jensen amp 600watt. In order for it to come on It is supposed to be linked to the stereo head unit over an REM line but obviously i dont have a REM line cause im using a computer not a damn stereo headunit. What is an REM line it comes off the headunits with a +12volts dc is all right?

So I can just hook the amp's Rem line to my accessory power to turn the amp on and off right?

yes it uses 12 volts. It shouldnt be a problem if you hook it to your accessory line as far as I know. When I was testing my amp out I just put a jumper wire from the 12 volt input for the amp to the REM wire and it started up fine. So it should work just fine.

REM stands for "remote" which is a small 12V line that gets turned on when the head unit is turned on. If you hook it up to your accessory line the amp will only turn on when your car turns on. What I would do is hook it up to the +12V from your computer supply and see if that works. The REM line hardly draws any current, it's just used to tell the amp when to turn on and when to turn off. It might not work because the PSU ground may be different than the car ground, but it's worth a try. Then it would turn on whenever you turn your computer on.

Hi Jake,

Is it working now?

I have a similiar problem, I'm building a soundsystem for a bike trailer, so don't have a REM cable. Can I have a wire with an inline switch from the +12v to REM?

Would that work or would it be a fire hazard?

SamV,
You can put a switch between a +12v source and the remote connection of the amp. I have a bench setup where I test amps and speakers and I just connect +12 to both remote and +12 input. I wouldn't suggest that for your setup though because it will draw power all the time and end up killing your battery.

If you're hooking the pc up to an amp for the bike trailer you can use a relay hooked to the +12v on the power supply to turn the amp on after the computer starts up. There are some circuits on here for "anti-thump" or delayed turn on. You'll want that so you don't hear a pop or thump when the computer starts up.

Thanks for the advice ik632, thankfully the amp has a delayed soft start so no nasty thumps on power up.
