Experimenting with Dash Cam. Should I convert my webcam to infrared?

I have a spare webcam laying around and I think it might be cool to set it up in my car as a dashcam, just incase. I have a program called Digiwatcher which takes very little resources (ran just fine on a 266mhz P2) and requires zero user intervention because it automatically deletes files after an X amount of days. I am thinking maybe setting it up to delete files after 7 days of normal driving which, according to my calculations, should take around 5gb of space.

I found this page on how you can easily turn a normal webcam into an IR webcam:

http://www.hoagieshouse.com/IR/

So for incar recording purposes, do you guys think it would be better to record in the IR wavelength? Or would useful information such as license plate information be lost by blocking out the visible spectrum? It would probably be better for nighttime use, but what about during the day?
