Can not using "safely remove hardware" kill usb keys?

Just curious.

My usb key was working just fine on my vista computer at home. Then I plug it into a linux machine at school to transfer some files, and unplug it from the linux machine.

I didnt use any sort of "safely remove hardware" function before unplugging because I never do that on a windows machine anyways. But now I plug the key back into my computer at home and all it does is flash for a few minutes and I get a popup saying windows needs to format it. So I click format, and it says windows cannot format.

I think my usb key is dead. Is it possible linux killed the usb key? Device manager says there is a usb mass storage attached, but the drive does not appear in "my computer" and i cannot access it. It was formatted with fat32 btw.
