I was going to use a $20 webcam from Staples but now I'm thinking about night vision and wondering what the cost would be to upgrade to one capable of taking nighttime images. I did a search but it was all old discussions of CCTV cameras and such. Any input?

Not really true thermal imaging night vision, but as a cheaper alternative, a standard webcam can be modded into an infrared webcam:

You will need some type of IR source though.
