I noticed this is appears to the be same one lacning74 is using in his setup. What I really like about this unit is that it has all the features of my old one, except this one supports continuous recording, up to a 32GB SD card, much better video quality, and very low power consumption at 5V. Does anyone have opinions? This appears to be the best DVR that is suited for automotive use at this point.
This is the unit I am eyeing also. Its not to big, just fat, but I love that it holds 32GB. If you do buy it, tell me how good it works. My only thing with it, is that it does not have a USB port to attach to a PC. In my case I have to transfer the recording to my HDD, I would have to take out the SD card and put it in my Card reader, not sure if its a big deal!

I did some more searching, and found the manual:
http://www.svat.com/downloads/manuals/cvp800-manual.pdf
This one is made by SVAT, but I am assuming the eBay one is the same and just relabeled, because they have the same specs any everything. Anyways, I went over the manual and I think this unit is exactly what I am looking for. Went ahead and placed an order on eBay. Also bought a 5v switching voltage regulator to go with it. 32GB cards are so expensive...I think I will stick with my 2GB and see how that goes...

my old secumate has been rock solid so far. in fact, now that the prices are better, i'm going to get another one to hook up to me back-up cam separately. cheaper and more reliable than getting a multichannel dvr for the same quality.
here's a recent near miss of mine:

OMFG..... see you made me reconsider my Camera setup. I was breaking my head trying to figure out how to get it into 3 way mode and only cover the rear, but stupid $h!+ like that on your video now has me embracing the four way mode which is front, left, right and back. Was it an old person? They always drive big cars and swear they own the road.

not old. just your average nyc livery cab driver. when your family's living depends on your fares, i guess it's not surprising.

Thankfully I drive a SUV, alot of people think twice before cutting me off. When they do they usually cut me off to go into a faster lane. Florida drivers are almost as bad as NYC drivers, so they tend to be predictable. They always seem to cut people off thinking they are going to a faster lane. Next thing you know they are trying to get back into the lane they just left, but at that point I am so enraged that Ive already taken there previous spot and am now driving side by side the car ahead of them. This keeps them from being able to pass. Its amazing though because you will see the car bob from lane to lane thinking that one of us will speed up. The final stage is they try to tailgate me, which results in me slamming my breaks, and them finally slowing down and driving decent. Its so sad but true. In NYC though I would have murdered someone if I lived there.
PS: I decided to look through your car cam playlist.... You did the same f#$king thing that the cab driver did in this one. Shame on you, LMFAO. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y2stw...eature=related
PS 2: OMFG you NY people drive like $h!+, I am so amazed at your collection, its like everytime you get into your car its an adventure, filled with humor (the 2 ladies fighting over the cab), and so on..... WOW.... Let me get back to watching them.
Back on topic..... So the Car PC doesnt have to be on right? How do you have it set up? I ask because I know you can set it to 24/7 mode so it records all the time, but I read in the instructions that if power is cut the video is corrupted. So I wonder what you do to avoid that? Or is it untrue and you can cut power. My setup is when I turn igniton the DQP and cams turn on.... I want the DVR to work that way also..... just automatically record.

I took a look at some of your videos too, and wow, the video quality is very good. Are you using it on low, med, or high quality mode? Also I am wondering if you have any idea how long 2GB can record, because I really rather not have to buy another SD card if possible.
I am also curious on how well the unit handles if the power is suddenly cut (or the degree of video "corruption"). I overlooked this fact. With my previous unit I can just turn it on and off like a light bulb, no problems at all. From the manual, it says "Power loss during a recording results in incomplete video or errors", so I am wondering how serious would this be since I dont intend to leave my unit running 24/7.

how come i missed this post
I was trying to get the same thin to work but I wanted real life access to the cameras from comp screen at any time + some extra features like shock sensor so if u get high shock the video gets automatically uploaded to your FTP server. My idea was to to use regular network DVR with MJPEG and intercept the strems. ANd have 24/7 acces to it over the net.
Faced / the problem that my DVR ate 15W +0.7 Wat for each camera as result my main battery would die in about 18 hours
Still looking for good solution w/ that needs, most likely will have to manufacture my own device (not hard but not fun either)
As to cameras, most CCTV quolity depnad on lens, the best lenses are from EverFocus, everything else is cheap crap that makes you think that yor 570 Lines camera is bad where its just lens itself

Sellout.woot.com has 32Gig Class 4 SDHC cards for $75 including shipping for today only.

Has anyone discussed where to find a good, cheap, efficient 5V power regulator yet that we can leave attached directly to our batteries?

Have you ever had any issues with your battery after leaving it running in your car for a few days? I'm considering picking up a deep cycle battery, but I'd also like to know what I'm up against. :-)

I bought this 5v switching regulator:
http://cgi.ebay.ca/3-Terminal-5V-1A-...3%3A1|294%3A50
I already have a 12v version of this regulator to power my camera, the 5v one will be for the new DVR I have coming in. A linear regulator would be way too inefficient, especially the 5V ones. With my previous system that ran completely on 12V, I would say I improved the efficiency by around 20% by going from a cheap linear regulator to a switching one.

even though i have free roadside assistant im not taking risk to tun it as long as it wants =)
i have hard switch to turn all my electronics when my keychain is outside the range
i have 10AMH battery (separate where dvr IS connected to, that gives 2-3 hours of live when im away from the car) at least during test...
