How cheap is cheap? I have a sheeva plug which runs on 5 volts and on the battery side of the regulator it only pulls 4 watts. So add whatever a USB camera's power consumption is which can't be more than .5 amps at 5 volts so assuming 90% efficiency, that's only adding .23 amps on the 12 volt side, so we're up to .6 amps on the 12 volt side. So you would need a roughly 14.4 AH battery to power it for 24 hours.

also, cheap cameras have higher lux ratings, making them produce alot of noise in dark images.
Well I was going to add illuminators, maybe I should buy a second one? The camera has 36 IR, and the illuminator has about 36 also.

I have a question.... How are you guys powering the Securmate? I cannot power it on my PSU, so it needs its own regulated 5V power. I have an adapter that has 4.5v regulated. Will that be enough to power the DVR?

lacning74 uses the secumate..... It seems to work perfectly. One thing I like is that if you turn off the car, and then turn it back on, it starts recording again. I do not know if the others do that.

I use the secumate too, it's the perfect surveillance recorder for the car. More channels = more power consumption, which most likely wont be practical for a 24/7 system. So there are tradeoffs.
As for the camera, anyone else mount theirs to the rearview and notice it gets very hot when sitting in a car with windows up and exposed to the sun all day?

Buy a DQP then connect that to the DVR. The DQP runs on 12V power. That is what I am doing. I have the cameras connected to the DQP, then from the monitor out on the DQP it goes to the DVR.

Your right, 4 constantly running cameras, a DVR, and the DQP would kill the battery. Thats why I decided to only use it for driving.

Yea, a Quad Splitter... Its cool because most DQP have a built in battery. So the time and date are always correct. So if you prgram it to show the time and date, then connect to the DVR, you will have accurate time and date. Why would the image be useless?

lets say you DVR runs at 640*480 (that waht 450TV lines( or max aboy 720x thats like 580 line) so when you use quad then you geting only 1/4 of the resolution for each channel so say i wana read license plate of other car but it will be too small and there is no option to zoom in as you only will have 160x120. So I can only use quad just to see general object presanse ((
My suplier salese 4ch mobile DVR for 200 buks and, im not sure what the power requirements for that... but it seams to be regular DVR w/ shock restrains

Well I figured out how to power the DVR. I had a couple of XM 5V car adapters laying around. Not sure if the plugs will fit into the DVR, but thats easy to swap out with the correct one.

OOHHHHH, I see what you are saying. Sorry for not getting you the first time. Yes it will be smaller, but if your recording and have to watch the video later and its too small. The DQP has a zoom feature to get in close when looking over the recording. It should be ledgable with the zoom feature. I would think it also depends on the quality of the camera too. Well I will say, I plan on trying it. I just have to buy the second DQP and the DVR, then I can check.

For me it is, lol..... Im really bad with that kind of stuff. I had to buy the special relay from Curiosity to get DQP #1 to go into the 3 way view that I wanted. I had been working on that for almost a year!!!!!!!!!!!!! Then he came along and boom, finished!
