I haven't looked at the detailed spec, but I think for the long run SSD is the way to go.
These drives will not hold out nearly as good as good as SSD drive. You can buy SSD drives for around 100 right now, only 32gb but definately more rugged proved.

Or you can pay less than $40 for 250GB SATA
Here is one example of a 2 second search on pricewatch.com
http://hypermicro.com/itemdesc.asp?ic=HDMX378
Very possible for this or other desktop drives to be in service in a car for many years....That is a lot of storage for not much money.

Around $100? The only thing around $100 I saw was like $225 for a reputable name, and only 32gb when I can easily do 250gb to 320gb for less than $100 which is enough space to hold anything I would ever want. I think Im going to go with this one. Its made for a lap-top so im sure it has some shock protection.

$160 is not bad... but as for now I can't justify throwing down that much just for 32gb. I'll press my luck with the regular hard drive, maybe by the time it fails, 128gb SSDs will be around $160.

I dont know how important its gonna be, but I decided get a Seagate EE Series drive for the system files on my set up. Thye are supposed to be "Automotive" and "Extreme Environment" grade drives. 40G was about $100. So its by no means a great sapce/$$ winner, all it has to hold is Windows and the front end, so I figure its worth the extra $$ if it turns out to be somewhat more durable.
For media, Im using a WD Baracuda (160 G). Figured just the large stuff, which is easey to back up/restore (doesnt change) would be fine to put on a drive that may eventually go. Although I have had a bunch of mb problems, the pc is installed in a C5 Corvette (not the softest suspension on the road ;-) ), and I havent had any HD related problems.
Just something to consider for anyone who is worried about HD longevity.

I've been running for a year with a standard laptop HDD. No problems yet.
My suspension is fairly hard, speed bumps hurt me but not the HDD.

another one with just a standard desktop drive - been running for 9 months in my lowered with stiff springs TransAm over rough country roads and no problem. You could buy 2 or 3 of my drives for what one of those cost and 250G of storage to boot - I do have the system/music backed up in a house server just in case

Yeah, that's what I just did, purchased a new EE seagate drive too. 80GB notebook HD that operates between -30C to +85C and designed for automotive use. Got lucky and won it on ebay for $32 + $9 shipping.
Also if you check the specs of most SSD drives, they don't operate below 0C making it a poor choice for cold weather. Beware not all SSD drives are fast, the one I had was painfully slow.

Wow: nice price. I think mine was like $175.
The SSDs I saw operated down to -10 celcius: about 14 degree farenheit. It gets colder here in the winter: thought I would be extremely surprised to see an SSD drive not operate at colder temperatures.
I am still thinking of getting a 32GBytes SSD for the faster bootup times. Hibernation can be a pain: doing a shutdown with fast boot would really be ideal.

You can get those super fast 32GB Core Series for just $140 shipped (lowest price Ive seen):

I wonder if anyone has opinions? I think these are supposed to be faster than the WD Raptors. But the thing that worries me is the MLC chips used only have about 10000 write cycles vs SLCs which have 1 million. Kind of tempted to get one for myself...
