Well this thought just occurred to me. For stuff with a serial, can't you just strip it and add a usb cable to it. isn't that what a serial to usb is really?

USB is a bit more complex than serial, since it has an actual defined protocol, which isnt simple to use, whereas serial, you use your own ad-hoc protocol.

However, Im not sure if there is a way to program a USB port to act as a protocol'less port? Like those serial converters you mention.
