BIOS posts but boot up freezes

I have a problem I wonder if anyone else has had. I have a VIA Mini-ITX SN. It's worked fine for about 5 months. I installed a new amplifier and the power wire got pinched in the door and blew the fuse. After opening the case, I hit the BIOS battery socket and knocked out the battery. (don't do mx at night).
The problem: Windows gets to the "windows failed and choose your method of booting" menu. ie. safe mode, safe mode with networking etc. Anything I select it says starting windows and freezes 1/4 of the way into the boot. I also made a USB boot thumb drive. About half the time it never gets to boot. It always freezes after running the first few startup files.
Any ideas?
I reset the BIOS (removed the bat and shorted the jumper) and it looks like it post fine 100% of the time.
I checked all the wires/ connections and they look good. I reset the RAM card.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Two things come to mind:

1 - Some windows files have gotten corrupted, causing the hang during boot. If this is the problem, a full reinstall of Windows will take care of the problem.

2 - Damaged HDD. If the damage is minimal, a full reinstall after a FULL format may resolve the problem. If the damage is deeper, then replacing the HDD is the only viable solution.
Realistically, if there is even minimal damage, you're probably better off replacing the HDD anyway, as those sorts of problems usually worsen over time.

I don't know that this is your issue. These are the first things that I would consider if I was facing your symptoms.

2 cents

check the ram, when it goes bad it tends to corrupt windows...
to check go to google and search for "memtest", create a bootable cd and boot from it; memtest will check your ram automaticly. If any errors are found the ram must be replaced.

try it and let us know...
