Using laptop in carputer?

Hi newbie here so go gentle!

I am planning on using a xenarc screen with vga input and touchscreen and my Dell Inspiron 5000e laptop with a docking station for my carpc. So far from reading on your board (some fantastic material guys!!) I think it will work, my question is regarding the audio. I plan on keeping my headunit so that the laptop does not always have to be on when I am driving, and run the audio through the cd changer input in that. (alipine 7893)

Is there a better way of getting the sound to the headunit than the 3.5mm plug on the laptop, as I reckon the sound will not be that great?

Any reccomendations or tips would be great, and I am sorry if this has already been posted, read most of the laptop threads I can find and come up with nowt...

Cheers
Henry

p.s a pic of the intended setup is here: here

the problem you might run into with sound is that the sound card might not be that great. Other then that it seems ok. If the changer is going right into the deck then thats good.

Yep the headunit is going to be all moulded in then covered in alcantara to mathc varioous other bits like moulded tweeter pods.

Is there anyway to change the soundcard in a laptop so that I can get decent quality.

Cheers for the info so far

try USB sound card as people here have done. Too bad you dont have a SONY deck or else you can use the XA300 aux input adapter. It has USB input for laptop. The laptop sees the XA300 as USB sound card and outputs the sound through there.

nice idea, it may still work though, as I could use the rca outs from that to go to the AiNet input on the headunit, I think it will convert to just having RCA inputs and that box seems to just have rca as the only out going to the headunit. Will it work do you think?

By the way, nice idea with the cliffnet wizard, plan on doing the same with my concept 500

With the XA-300 are you able to not use any headunit and hook it up directly to your amps, or would this not be a very good idea.

scary, I have the same plan, and the same laptop, 5000e with port replicator.

The "advanced" port replicator I have has a SPIDF output on it too, but my HU doesnt have a digital input.

I am going with the same screen DSCustom version.

Let me know how your install goes/went.
