GWC UD-200 USB 2.0 High-Speed to IDE-ATAPI Adapter Cable
Just curious....
Would something like this allow enough bandwidth to properly play a DVD if you had a slim slot DVD drive attached to it??

I believe the Epia 10000M has USB 2.0 Sweet! This is a good way of getting a slim DVD drive into the dash without having to worry about the distance of an IDE cable then!
I think I may order myself one of these babies! Anybody else try something similar and care to comment on how it performed??
Thanks!

i have installed a usb 2.0 ide controller like this one in my car to use my dvd-rom with it. it was actually thaught for harddrives and came in a nice harddisk enclosure which i took apart and ripped the pcb's off. it works fine, only that i can't boot off my cdrom even if my bios claims to support usb-cdroms to boot from. but that's not so bad, whenever i setup an os i'll take the pc inside my house anyway...
at this point i can't say much about performance, since i use an old usb 1.1 hub in between, so dvd playback is not really possible but it is already an acceptable cd-rom for every other thing (even listening to cd's while driving, althoug i have a lowered car with hard springs and i use a regular lite-on cdrom)
i'll let you know how it performs as soon as i found a usb 2.0 hub that runs with 12V (everyone i found so far uses 5V)
cheers

hey..
sorry, i forgot about this thread.. i installed Power DVD and played some DVD's and it really worked well without any troubles! i am totally satisfied with this solution and would recommend it to everybody who keep their DVD-Rom too far away from the pc to use an IDE Cable.. of course, when copying files from DVD to your harddrive, it could be faster, but it still works at acceptable speeds (USB2 supports about 400Mbits, that's still 4 times 100mbit Ethernet ;-))
cheers

by the way.. I didn't need an external power supply for the USB 2 Hub as the dealer told me. it works on full speed even without extra power (attached to it are: this IDE controller, 1 illuminated Keyboard, 1 USB2Gameport adapter)

When your copying files off that DVD onto your hard drive, its not the USB connection slowing you down. DVD drives can only copy at speeds of 10mb/s or so max, which is still far less than the 480mbit/s that USB 2.0 is capable of.
