IDE -> USB?

I would like to get a long IDE cable so I can mount my DVD/CDR in my dash, but the computer is under the back seat, I also heard that IDE cables shouldnt be over 18" long and its way more than 18" to the back seat from the dash.

What are some options I have so I can still keep the PC where it is and move the DVD/CDR to the dash. (i dont have friewire). USB 2.0 or something?

Go the usb 2.0 route. Ends up being roughly the same price, anyways.

How are you planning to power it? Can you run a computer power cable that long as well?

yes, power is not a concern, I have a 5 foot long power cable that tested fine with the imac sloat load DVD. The problem is the IDE cable. There are people here that got it working with an 80 wire 40 pin conector IDE cable, but I do not know where to get one of about 4-5 feet.

i might be misunderstanding, but you can get an usb=>ide conveter for $35. any external usb2.0 case has that circuitry, i have one and it's nice. infact i got TWO ide devise to work with it when i pluged it into my XP machine, a cd-rw and a zip100. the powersupply even had adaquate rating to power both, it's a 110v to 12v&5v PS. however, it didn't read the second drive with win98 on the laptop. lateorn, Corey

Does the HDD get the Power from the USB or does the case have a power cable?

i have a 5.25" usb 2.0 external case. it uses an 110v a/c power source. however i have seen some usb powered hard drive cases for 2.5"/laptop sized/style hard drive. this seems to be a trend. lateorn, Corey
