inside the car, heat ?

Hi,

I'm thinking of just putting the carputer under the passanger seat. Something similar to what spyhunter had, just a board and some screws. Now would heat be an issue? I live in NY and I suppose it gets as hot as anywhere else. I can always add 2 fans or so if necessary.

mine is in a steel drawer with only the cpu fan on it and it has been fine in the 90 degree heat we have had lately

anyone else? I know you can simply use a fan to keep it cool while its running. but has anyones system gone toast simply from sitting in a hot car?

I have been running my system in the back cab of my truck for about two weeks now and I haven't had any troubles yet w/ no fans. I live in New Orleans and its been really hot lately.

I think I fried my memory recently from heat...I am trying other options now, under the pass seat being one of them...

My system sometimes halts because of overheating. I suspect the harddrive to be the problem (3.5" 7200 rpm is a small plastic box with almost no airflow).

It only crashes after an hour or two and only when Destinator is running. No problems so far when only a (DirectShow based) media player is running.

Soon I'll be building a new car computer, which will have some temperature controlled fans in the case to prevent these things.

My system was fine in the near 100 degree F (37 degree C) heat we had recently in the UK. Ran for a couple of hours with no problems.

I live in Southern San Joaquin Valley in California. I haven't had major heat issues yet. It's been averaging 97F to 103F lately with highs top out at 110F this summer. My PC starts right up every time. I had a couple of freezes. One was bumps on the road. and the other one I think may have been heat related. About a month ago I left my CarPC on over night in the garage with all the windows up when it's averaging 103F outside. I was serving a FTP site from my CarPC. My brother wanted to download a few MP3s from my truck. I got into the truck the next day and noticed the PC was frozen up. I push the reset button to restart it then it ran all day with windows down with no problems. I don't think heat by itself can cause problems. I think lack of air circulation is what causes the problem. I take long trips with A/C on all the time, never had a freeze up. Believe it or not, of all the components, hard drive is the hottest. The CPU is up there too. But with ACPI enabled, the CPU stays at ambient temp unless you start running CPU intensive programs. My home desktop's hard drive registered 115F and the base of the CPU heatsink read 90F. RAM read 95F. I have an infrared thermometer so I know the reading is pretty accurate. I anticipated the heat problem when I built my CarPC. That's why I put 4 high volume fans in my case. So far it's working beautifully accept for the noise. Man this thing is LOUD. But I love it. I look at it this way. Can your stereo check the price of an ebay item or monitor your engine status or roll your windows up? hehe.
