16x2 LCD display

Does anyone have a 16x2 LCD (44780 based) working with winamp? I would like to have the vis_LCDi.ini file included with the plugin ready to work with a screen like mine.
Please mail it to: garciaae@stones.com

If you've already got an HD44780-based LCD, no matter what size, then you should be able to make the .ini work for your display without much trouble. Just give it a try.

I've tried it many times in different ways but i only get a gray shadow (display seems to show something like an uniform shadow in the first line and the top half of the second)
Please, send me the file (i think it's only 1k)
Thanks.

I have exactly the same problem, the display 16x2 doesn't work. I've tried many configurations, but I did not find one that works...

If anyone have the solution, please send an e-mail for me too...

I got my 16x2 LCD working with the plugin (for about a day) but now all it will do is display black squares which sounds similar to garciaae's problem.

Have I stuffed the controller or something?

It sounds like you all have the 2 line LCD wired differently than the plugin is programmed for.

I have been using a 16 * 2 display and a 16 * 4 display for a long time now, they both work well although the 16 * 4 requires + and - 5v. The -5v goes on pin 3, although if you had this type of display you wouldn't see the little grey squares when using a + voltage only grey smoke.

If you are just getting a line of 'shadow' at the top of the LCD and nothing at the bottom, it means that the LCD is powered correctly, but the software has not been able to initialise the driver chip.

Check the data pins are wired correctly and the two control pins for read/write and register select and also wired correctly.

Using Windows NT will also not work as it blocks direct access to the parallel port.

Also, beware, some peoples circuit diagrams are stating you need -5volts for the 16 X 2 display when this should read 0V or GND.

Actually there are drivers under NT that allow direct parallel port access. I forget the company but a web search should bring up some links about this.

And some LCDs do actually get better contrast if a negative voltage is available for bias. A common configuration is to have a 10k or so pot with the wiper connected to the LCD's bias pin and the ends of the pot to +5 and -5V, respectively. A 330 ohm resistor betwee n the pot and the LCD wouldn't hurt either, to limit current.
